Q: Double tap Home to jump between apps..broken ?

HI All.

Just received the new 5s 16GB..and what a hair pulling nightmare..from no 'Mail sync" in info.....(until iOS 8 at least) and no ability to jump between apps with open dialogue boxes  .... oh why'd id my old 4s WiFi chip have to die......oh yes I remember..I upgraded to iOS 7 ..that killed it.

Anyway ..enough moaning g..back to the point....jumping between apps with an open dialogue box...or the inability to do it now..

Is this a 'new feature' a bug or setting or what?

I know on my old 4s with pre 7 iOS, I could double tap the home icon when a dialogue box was open and jump to, say Notes, copy a setting....like a WEP key, then double tap again, and go back to the settings, and paste the copied text.

Now it seems that the only way to copy that bit of info from Notes to paste in the settings, is by hitting the Power key, and powering off..swiping to open..and getting in a quick double tap before the dialogue opens.

It seems that when a dialogue box is open, you can't double tap and close  anything ..it 'locks' to that screen.  You can't even force close that app..

For one or two dialogue boxes not an issue...but for instance the Mail app..when I have 8 e-mail accounts, ( two different business accounts, gmail, yahoo, and two private own domain accounts) and for one reason or another I don't have Wifi or cellular data..or a password is wrong...I end up having to click through up to 18 to 20   "OK" or Cancel" dialogue boxes, ( usually three per e-mail account) before I can close the app

In previous iterations of iOS with the 4s, I could double tap and swipe the offending mail app away ...not I have to click through all the bloody dialogue boxes telling me I have no connection ..can't get mail etc etc....  More than annoying..

any tips to get around this appreciated...feedback already submitted.

There has never been any kind of "dialogue box" when double clicking the home button.   Double clicking the home button shows the recently opened app icons along the bottom of the screen with a preview above each icon. To open one of the apps, touch the icon and the app opens.  Copy what you want, double click, open the the other app, then paste.  The preview screens are used to close the apps by slideng the screens up.  See this:

Ummm..I can't work out the 'Quotes' and how to do them on this forum board..so I'll just use bold and different fonts.

But you mis understand my question...

Here is part of my original post

I could double tap the home icon when a dialogue box was open

Implying that the dialogue box is already open BEFORE I use the double tap function.

As I go on to further explain, this dialogue box could be from either WiFi asking for a password, or Mail asking for a password, or Mail telling me it can't connect to the Server.

When you have 8 e-mail accounts and you have to hit OK or Cancel  twice per e-mail account..before you can close the app...it is more than frustrating.  ..all these multiple dialogue or warning boxes and you can't get out of them without acknowledging each of them.  You used to be able to Double tap, and Swipe the preview up to close the app..or jump to another app.

I understand this perfectly, what you said:

Double clicking the home button shows the recently opened app icons along the bottom of the screen with a preview above each icon. To open one of the apps, touch the icon and the app opens.  Copy what you want, double click, open the the other app, then paste.  The preview screens are used to close the apps by slideng the screens up.  See this:

..and that is what I am trying to do.  But when one of these Mail or Wif bode Dialogues or warnings are open the double tap is not possible..it does not work.  so you can't go to the other app to copy and paste. or slide the preview screen up to close it.

You need to fix your dialogue box issues first.  Use the proper password for those account/networks/etc, and you'll stop getting the popups.

I see why you would say that, but that is rather like telling a new Range Rover owner to get the off road tracks they they  drive smoothed over,  rather than sort out the variable ride height suspension.

Something is broken that used to work before.

Often the issue is just that you have left the phone in flight mode, or WiFi off...I am in / out of airports and hospital Intensive and Critical care units a lot, so often turn it all off.

To have to acknowledge 16 times (2 per mail account) that the "MailServer can't be reached" ..or what ever the error is...before you can close the mail app or use double tap to turn the Wifi on or flight mode off is just ...well more than immensely frustrating.

Before you could double tap,   close the offending mail app, turn off Flight Mode, then open Mail again once data connection re established.  You can't do that now without wading through all the 'errors'

Even if you use Power Button to close the phone..as soon as you Swipe to Unlock...the Bloody mail app errors are still their stealing focus till you acknowledge them all.

Mail often looses passwords, as does the WiFi setting.  has done since my first iPhone 3 .so even when fixed, it will always breaks again/ loose the passwords, So this is why I store them as Notes..so I could jump to the Notes, via Double tap, scroll to the Notes..select and copy the password, then double tap again, back to the WiFi or Mail app , and paste in the relevant password and carry on.

Now it seems you can't use the double tap while a SOME dialogue boxes are open.  if you are manually configuring the System Settings, then double tap works to bring up the active apps.  If it is an Error Dialogue, then the Double Tap does not work.....or is there a setting somewhere to configure it?

As previously mentioned you need to get your dialogue box issues fixed first. There are reasons you are getting "errors". But it appears you don't want to address those warnings so until you do you are stuck with what you have.

I obviously have not explained carefully enough..Thought I was being detailed enough..

Often the 'Error dialogues" appear BECAUSE THE WIFI is turned OFF.

They are not real errors.  that require 'fixing'

The only way you can address them.  YOU "FIX" them but turing in Wifi on ...but you can't until you acknowledge all the dialogues. /  go through all these 'spoof' error messages

There IS NO ACTUAL error to fix.   apart from Turn WiFi back on, or flight mode off.  on log back in to the Wifi network,

In iOS 4 you could double tap, jump to the WiFI screen, turn it back on, ,, swipe to close the mail app and re open, bypassing the need to acknowledge all these 'errors"

Do you get what I am saying now?

The issues you are describing with the dialogue boxes always popping up are not normal.  It's like complaining that your CD player skips because your suspension is shot and your car is constantly bumping & shaking.  Instead of complaining that the CD is skipping, you need to get the shocks fixed.

You need to troubleshoot the dialogue issues.  You'll basically be killing two birds with one stone.

    Yes, I know that.

    I'll try a 4th time to explain.

these dialogue issues DO NOT NORMALLY HAPPEN!!     !

They only happen when either WiFi is OFF or password has gone astray.

Most of the time a send/receive is just fine.....no problems..there are NO ISSUES to FIX

It is either caused by a missing password, or no internet connection.

iOS Mail passwords always go missing..it has been the same since my first iPhoine...most of the time no need to re enter the password..but every now and then..a few times a week, the password goes..this is not just with the new phone..every iPhone , sync to the mac has done this

WHEN IT DOES occur, you can't just do the Double tap to close the app and fix the issue.

Double Tap does not work like it used to,   that you could close the app...fix the issue and continue

I know how to fix the issue when they occur...re enter the Wifi Password, e-mail password, what ever.....   BUT AS soon as the error occurs ...you can't do what is basically the iOS version of CMD Q or Force Quit..you have to go and acknowledge all the messages....and with 8 mail accounts..it is a lot of messages...and of course..the place to tap on the screen...for OK or Cancel...changes between messages.

Yes, we get  what you say.  despite your incorrect terminology (these are error notifications, not "dialogue boxes").  In all of the examples you provided, (no WiFi, Airplane Mode, mail server) if you select "OK" in the notification, it closes, and life goes on...

It's clear that you are getting this myriad of error messages because of setup and usage errors.  The mail server errors occur because you set up your mail accounts incorrectly,  WiFi off and airplane mode on notifications occur only when attempting to do something that requires WiFi on or airplane mode off.  Regardless, simply selecting "OK" closes the notice.

Getting back to your mail server issues and your claim  of "no mail sync until iOS 8", these are problems of your own doing.  There are no mail sync issues in iOS 7, and there have been no announcements of any change in mail syncing for iOS 8.  You need to correct the account set up errors or reinstall  you mail accounts correctly.

"Mail often looses passwords, as does the WiFi setting. "

Do the passwords get 'loose' in your phone, or do you mean lose passwords?  I have owned 6 different iPhones since 2007, and have used many others (wife's, daughters', friends') and found this to be a very rare event and sign of a problem in the phone,

No the Mail Sync issue is not of my doing..I did not remove the "Sync mail accounts"  from the Info pane of iTunes..that was definitely done by Apple.  I have been told that this returns hand has been tested in one of the next Betas.

Call theses messages what you like..you still have to go through them, one for each e-mail account.  Where as before you could just Double tap and close the Mail app

Yes...Lose..but this  forum does not allow editing of the post after a certain period,

If it is a rare event a problem with the phone, then maybe Apple purposely sends all its 'seconds ' items over to us here in Jersey,  UK, because it has always been an issue with every iPhone I had.  The part of the UK I am in (Jersey island)..we can't even use the App Store..unless we register our credit cards to a UK mainland address and use false details when registering..We can't use the iPhoto print set ices either..so if Apple are sending us their 'seconds ' used crap would not be a surprise.  They screwed me with the memory installed in my Mac, after it was paid for ..same with t monitor. ordered, paid for..but when delivered...'Oh sorry..we have discontinued that model...but here have this Samsung instead

So if they are set up incorrectly, why do they work correctly 90%when WiFi or Cellular is on but not when WiFi is off...To me it is because they don't have an internet connection.

Not really. If it's a short cut you are looking for swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access Control Center and turn wifi on/off as needed.

    No,

I want to do what I have alway done with the 4s, which is

When mail insists on giving me two 'error messages' per e-mail account, when it can't access the internet, I don;t want to acknowledge each one, i just want to close Mail by:

    Double tap the Home button.

Get the list of running apps.

Close Mail by swiping its Preview upwards  (to avoid working my way through the error/message  info screens..what ever they are called)

You used to be able to do this when a Mail error message was on display on the iPhone 4s.  But with the 5s, Double Tap Home icon seems to be locked/blocked/broken while one of these messages is displayed.

Other times the Double Tap works fine, It only fails when specific errors occur..Like the WiFi password is lost, the Account password has not saved

Huh?  I was referring to your claim that mail and WiFi "often" lose passwords - error messages that doesn't even occur when internet access is disabled.

When you try to use mail, which requires internet access, you will get a notification of such, which is dismissed by touching "OK", as I previously described.  Absolutely no reason to double click the home button.

No the Mail Sync issue is not of my doing..I did not remove the "Sync mail accounts"  from the Info pane of iTunes..that was definitely done by Apple.  I have been told that this returns hand has been tested in one of the next Betas.

No, this had nothing to do with iOS 7 - it was due to OS X 10.9 removing Sync Services.  It already has been returned in the latest versions of OS X 10.9.3 and iTunes.  Update your computer.

You're also confusing  iPhone 4s vs. 5s functions with iOS functions.  Everything works the same way under iOS 7 on both phones.  At fist I thought you were using iOS 6 on the 4s, but you now describe swiping up the preview screen on the 4s which means you were using iOS 7 on that phone as well.
