Aug 17, 2014 2:52 PM in response to tmunro8by sberman,Adding to leroydouglas' comments, with which I agree ...
You haven't told us anything about the type of Mac you have.
if it's a MacBook Air, it cannot have its memory upgraded. If the Mac is old, it may be too old to run Mavericks.

Aug 17, 2014 2:59 PM in response to tmunro8by sberman,You said it was from 2007. It would have to be an iMac or MacBook Pro to be able to run Mavericks. And it would have to be from mid-2007 or later.

These statements contradict each other. "iMac,1" is from 1999 as shown here:

You can check OWC's site to see installation instructions.

Are you sure you want to pour money into a seven year old computer instead of replacing it?

Aug 17, 2014 4:07 PM in response to sbermanby tmunro8,Not sure of buying a new one only problem with this one is the lack of memory. By the looks of things it would be an inexpensive upgrade. So far we have only bought mountian lion for this computer. New would be nice but not really necessary right now.

Aug 17, 2014 4:09 PM in response to sbermanby tmunro8,Thank you so much for your time. This is the only problem we have encountered with our Mac. New would be nice but this one is still running ok.
Thanks again. I will be buying the upgrade and maybe in a little while we will update our Mac with a new one.
