It sounds like you want to use iCloud Calendars with the Calendars application on your Mac. The article linked below will walk you through adding the iCloud account to your MacBook Air and enabling the calendar syncing.

What I want to do is make my iCloud or the MacBook Air calendar a consistant part of my desktop - that is, when I open my desktop, the calendar opens too and is part of my desktop - not just the icon, but the calendar itself.
