When on an active phone call I cannot activate the keyboard to navigate an automated switchboard. Why?

iPhone 5, iOS 7.1.2

    Are you referring to the numeric keypad? If you bring the phone from your ear, the screen should come back on and one of the choices is Keypad, and that should bring it back on the screen for you to see the numeric pad.

    I can see the icon for the keypad but when I touch it will not activate and go to full screen.

    What troubleshooting have you tried? First try powering your phone off/on. Test. If that does not work, then do a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. Test after that. This will not affect your data in any way and this should correct this. Just make sure that you are not reaching down from the top and covering the proximity sensor, which would turn the screen off while you are trying to tap on the icon. It should have a bright white color to it, and not subdued for you to be able to tap on it.
