Q: key not valid for use in specified state

Try this based on aniwack's contribution.

For "Key not valid for use in specified state" errors try moving the folder RSA from C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA to say C:\RSA (just in case there should be a need to restore it) then try installing again. This folder appears to act as a cache and should be rebuilt automatically as required.

That solution worked for me as well.

Looks like it can be used for other programs as well and only exists on Windows 7 and 8 after microsoft update mentioned in one of this links.

I recently had this with ITunes when downloading on Windows 8. I had also previously encountered this same message "Key not valid for use in specified state" whilst attempting to download some 3D drawing software. After hours of online searches and unfruitful telephone support I came across a fix online that has worked for not only ITunes download but 2x other drawing software issues with same message. Someone even had success with Tom Tom software.

The issue appears to relate to Windows update (KB2918614). Go to Control Panel>Programs>Programs & Features>View Installed Updates> .Locate Windows update (KB2918614) and uninstall it. Reboot computer and install ITunes.

N.B. - If you have Windows Updates set on Automatic the update will reinstall itself again in due course.

  Here is what finally worked.

1. Open control panel

2. Open Programs and Features.

3.Click itunes

4 Click Change

5 Click Repair.

alright so i did uninstall everything published by apple, rebooted, retried downloading itunes and still key error how did you fix this cuz apple support is no help at all

Or you could create a new user with administrator status and try installing iTunes from that account.

Just for reference tt - I tried new user before found solution. No joy. I actually had to look for solution and found it one day before it was posted here, but I was unable to check it until few days later when I posted. All the regular stuff didn't work. I also suspect (speculation) that  computers with that message have at least one piece of hacked software. Apple support refers to Microsoft for that problem and they are perhaps right to do that - since on the system I worked with Malwarebytes was glitching and unable to update either(fixed as soon as folder removed) and the problem seems to be between Windows and RSA certs.

Thanks for that. I suggested a new user account since the RSA fix works (when it works) on the current user account, and there is just a possibility that another account might not have the same issue. Sadly there seem to be far too many potential points of failure for what should be a routine software upgrade process, and no universal set of steps that guarantee a successful install for everyone.
