Q: The wireless cable modem is in the basement.  Can I set up a Time Capsule I have wirelessly upstairs within wifi range but not connect it to the modem directly?

We have recently moved.  The cable modem/wireless network is tucked away in the basement.  I would like to set up my Time Capsule upstairs near our MAC but not connected thru an Ethernet cable.  Basically I want to use it an a network extender.  I can find nothing in the manual that mentions this.

The Time Capsule will only extend a wireless network if it used with another Apple router.......an AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.

So, you would need to add an Apple router near the modem/router and have it provide a wireless network which the Time Capsule could extend.

If you do not want to add another Apple rower, then you will need to establish a wired Ethernet connection between the Time Capsule and your modem/router either by running an Ethernet cable between them, or if that is not possible, possibly using a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send the signal over the existing AC wiring in your home.
