Q: How to share printer

I must be missing something really simple here.

I have a USB printer connected to an iMac running 10.9.4. Printer sharing is turned on.

I also have a MacBook Air, running 10.9.4. It does not see the printer.

All the instructions from Apple say I can share printers with "other Macs on the same network". I guess the MBA isn't "on the same network" as the iMac. How do I get them "on the same network" so the MacBook Air can see and print to the iMac's printer?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), iMac (Late 2009), 3.06GHz

That article doesn't help. It tells me how to set up a printer that my MacBook Air can see. My problem is that my MacBook Air can't see any printers.

The article does mention that my MacBookAir can print to:

    • "A printer that is being shared by another Mac on the home network."

I guess my problem is that my iMac and my MBA aren't "on the home network" and that's why the MBA can't see it.

How can I get my MBA to see my iMac's printer? Or how do I set up a "home network", if that is what I need to do? Is that what I need to do?

You need to tell us what your network IS like if you want help - or are you saying you're trying to print to your home printer while away?

I was able to fix this by turning screen sharing on and then off. After that the iMac's printer showed up on the MBA. I don't know how or why doing that worked, but I can print now. Thanks.
