Q: In iPhoto, you cannot capitalize a name that begins with the letters Sh, such as Shirley, Sherry, etc. The S will not be in caps.

    Sure you can:

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:

    - What version of iPhoto.

    - What version of the Operating System.

    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.

    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?

    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.

    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?

Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Are you asking about image titles or faces names?

It is just a hunch, but capitalisation errors can be caused by the spell checker.  If you have a face name starting with a lower case "sheila" somewhere in your faces, the spelling correction will automatically change "Sh...." to the lower case version, to prevent you from entering the same name with two different capitalisations.

Search for lower case Sheilas etc. and correct them.  You can force the entering of the Upper case version by first entering "xSheila" and then editing out the leading "x".

Well, as I stated originally, my operating system is Mavericks 10.9.4. The iPhone version is 9.5.1 (902.17).

I gave a full description of the problem: names beginning with Sh do not capitalize the S. I have no other known issues.

How long has this been going on? I just bought this computer less than a month ago, and have just begun transferring my photos to iPhoto.

    There are no error messages.

Your list of questions, while quite valid in some cases, were of no use to me. However, the response from leonie helped me to fix the result of the glitch, I am still left with a systemic problem unresolved.

Your list of questions, while quite valid in some cases, were of no use to me. However, the response from leonie helped me to fix the result of the glitch, I am still left with a systemic problem unresolved.

Your working under the assumption, that this systematic problem is a general problem with iPhoto under Mavericks. We are having your problem report and see, that it is happening on your Mac, in your user account, with your iPhoto Library.

I could not reproduce the problem on my Mac withe the same system and iPhoto version, other than the glitch with the spellchecker and autocorrection.   If you want to confirm a general bug with iPhoto on Mavericks, you need to do systematic trouble shooting and exclude all possible causes on your Mac. TD's questions were necessary to narrow down the possible reasons, why your Mac is behaving differently from ours  and to be able to reproduce the problem for systematic testing.

    • Test with a new iPhoto Library with new photos. This will exclude your iPhoto library as the cause of the problem.
    • Test in a different user account. This will exclude all settings and preferences, permissions and access control lists, startup items and preference panes  in your current account.
    • Test in Safe Mode to disable non-standard startup items and extensions.

This will either help to confirm system wide trouble on your Mac, perhaps an iPhoto bug, or help you to identify, what may be wrong with your iPhoto Library, user library, or installed applications on your Mac.

See this document: It explains, why problems after a system upgrade do not necessarily mean, that the new software is faulty. It may just be exposing old problems, that have lain dormant for a long time:
