Q: Hello all, I broke iPhoto. When I go Utilities>User>Pictures. it says "Pictures-Bash-80x24" Help? Thanks.

Just bought a Macbook Air running 10.9.4 and was trying to transfer iPhoto library from our old laptop via an external HD.

After I copied the old library to Pictures folder, iPhoto prompted me to install and run upgraded.

I did that but when I try to open iPhoto it still prompts me "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." after I click upgrade it shuts down immediately. When I try to access the library as described above, it only opens what I believe is called a package.

reading "Pictures-bash-80x24"

Do I delete the Pictures folder and start over? if so, how?

Thanks

Back up all data before proceeding.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    xattr -c Pi*

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Test.

Thank you for this. I can now access iPhoto and the library/albums are all there but all of the photo frames are blank.

I will try to reimport from the external HD and see if that works.

    Do you have additional suggestions?

    Thanks

    These are your options:

    1. Restore the iPhoto library from the most recent backup that predates the issue.

Advantages: Always works, if library damage is causing the problem and the backup is intact.

Disadvantages: Impossible if you don't have a backup. All changes made since the backup are lost.

    2. Repair or rebuild the library. Be sure to back it up first.

Advantages: May solve the problem with no loss of data.

Disadvantages: May fail. May take a long time if the library is large.

    3. Scavenge the library with a third-party application called "iPhoto Library Manager," which you can find in a web search. From the application's menu bar (not the iPhoto menu bar), select Library Rebuild.

Advantages: All images should be preserved.

Disadvantages: All books, calendars, and slideshows will be lost.

    O.k.,

all photos are there now, but are all in recovered folder, which is close enough.

    Many thanks.
