Oct 27, 2013 6:41 AM in response to BHRDby Slvn,Here with iOS7, iPhone 5, Maverick.
Tethering via USB works only when I turn WI-FI off.
For years, my only internet connection has been by USB from iPhone. WI-Fi on or off.
Something is broken.
Maverick and iOS7 where both installed in the same hour, so I cannot tell witch one broke the other.

Open network preferences.
Then select 'Set service order' under the little gear and the down arrow.
Put iPhone USB on top of the others.
Apply.

Oct 29, 2013 1:29 PM in response to Slvnby filbert66,Before upgrading from 10.7 to Mavericks, when I upgraded to iTunes 11.1.1 it broke again. But yesterday tried after upgrading both my MBP and iPhone5 (to 10.9 and 7.0.3 respectively. iTunes is now 11.1.2) and it worked out of the box!
I think this means Apple has fixed the problem.

May 4, 2015 4:22 AM in response to kopite1980by Not Happy at all with Apple,I thought after so many complaints that Apple would actually do something about this issue, but nearly 2 years later, NO. I made the mistake of updating my iPhone 5 a few days ago, and have just spent the last couple of hours fixing Apple's indifference.
I have an Apple phone and and Apple computer, so surely there should be no problem.
(I have an iPhone 5 and the issue has arisen twice after updating iOS later than 7.0.
SOLUTION: for me is an app called KEXT UTILITY to fix AppleUSBEthernetHost.Kext file.
Google those items to find the right file, or use Time Machine to find the working file from your old system on your Mac (before you updated your phone).
Good luck to every disgruntled Apple user.

Jun 17, 2015 3:10 AM in response to BHRDby ithomo,I resolved this by updating the PC to the latest version of iTunes. Presumably it updated the drivers on the PC for the more recent iOS. Now USB Hotspot works everytime again.
