Q: Design fault? 27" 2013 iMac stand just gave up!

Hi all,

I was just sitting watching TV when there was a loud crack and my iMac screen suddenly tilted down - now the screen will not stay where it is tilted / positioned. I was not using the mac at the time and it was not doing anything it just broke on its own. The mac was only bought in February and has not been moved or tilted once it was in place. This looks like a major design flaw to me as a 10 month mac just fails on its own! Has anyone else suffered this malfunction?

I have yet to contact apple as the store will be closed now but am interested to know if anyone else has suffered the same problem and what apples response was?

I will keep you guys posted once I have spoken to Apple

I've found that a 4-sided Rubiks Cube works perfectly.  It keeps at just the right height.  I started a FaceTime call and my caller couldn't see me.  I had the cube just sitting on my desk, and it works perfectly.  The screen sits right in-between two of the small cubes.

Well I'm taking my droopy Mac into the Apple Store next week to see what can be done. The machine is only one month out of warranty. I'll claim 'not fit for purpose' under UK consumer law.

I went to Apple Service and they had one month service line , but as I pointed out that I use this for my business, we made deal that they order new replacement spring for my iMac (iMac was with me at the Service), when is my turn at the service line, they call me and I can go there and 24h they fix my iMac stand.

So I'm at one month service line, but I can use my iMac at home when I waiting, this was good service so far

Our Apple Service says that this dilema is Warranty issue, and remember people, if you are living at EU area, all you stuff has Two year EU warranty, this concerns Apple all so here in EU.

Another one bites the dust: When returning from holidays I found my 27" iMac tilted down. It was bought on Dec'13. Still under Apple warranty. I made an appointment to the nearest Apple store. Just for the spanish people I will include the keywords so they can find this thread:

pedestal iMac 27 pulgadas no se mantiene en vertical, muelle de la pantalla no funciona, pantalla inclinada.

I will be back with updates.

    Regards.

I was sitting at my desk tonight when I heard a loud pop from my late 2012 27-inch iMac and sure enough the monitor tilted down. I hardly touch my iMac and very rarely adjust the angle of the screen. And like most of the comments here, I wasn't touching the iMac when it popped. It certainly seems like a design flaw. I have AppleCare now, but by time it goes again, I won't. Hopefully Apple will offer an extended repair period for the issue. I'll be making an appointment tomorrow at the Apple Store.

My 27" iMac (late 2013) stand broke last week without any force from outside. It seems to be a design fault!

Same Apple Design flaw here... display made loud snap then tilted forward. No one was touching it. Cannot adjust keeps tilting forward. Computer 1 yr 4 months old! Set up call into Apple Support but from the replies I've read hear I don't expect a satisfactory solution.

Took mine into the Apple Store today. it will be repaired FOC even though it is one month out of warranty. We have good consumer laws here in the EU. Should be back with me in around 5 days.

Took my 4 month old failed iMac to apple store - should be fixed in 3 - 5 days... they charged me $28 to fix this!!! I told the guy - I bought a mac for $3000 and now have to carry it in and out and be without my computer for 3 - 5 days and he charges me $28!!! Poor service....  It is like buying a business class ticket and getting charged $1 for Coke...

I have a extremely hard time believing this. You say you took the computer to an Apple Store, this an Apple owned Apple store or some reseller? If it's a reseller, you should have been speaking to a manager. If it's an Apple owned Apple store, I'm sorry sir but I simply cannot believe this claim.

Same here. My mac is never moved or transported. Just gave way while I working on it. Loud cracking sound and my screen is looking at my keyboard. Unfortunately I installed an SSD blade so no warranty...

Ah, me too.  27" 2013 imac.  Everything else is fine.

Of note, the spring never held the screen at the angle I wanted for very long.  The power cord was always tugging it back (downwards).  Now it wont stay at all.  I had one loud pop about a month ago, then another today (not clear why, the first seemed to be all that it took to have the mechanism not hold.)

    Hi everyone

I just came back from an Apple authorized service provider.

They fixed my computer and gave me the broken part as you can check in the image. The total cost was 245 USD to fix the failure. I know, its absurd the price here in Brazil: 53 dollars only for the new part and the rest of the money for the service. I forgot to make the apple care protection plan before my computer made 1 year of use, my mistake.

It's very sad that a 3000 dollars computer relies it self on one cent plastic ring.  I'm not an engineer or designer but I think that a plastic ring holding a metal spring is not the best choice. I think this ring  should be made of metal or any harder material that properly holds  the tension of a metal spring.

As you can check in the uploaded image, the plastic ring highlighted in red fits under the screw and holds the spring.

Good luck with your broken mechanism, the fix of my computer was expensive but was made in 8 hours.

ps. Please don't delete these message, is the third time I try to write to this discussion group to show solutions and answers about this problem. I'm not using anything in these text that is against the company policy like rants or complaints. Im just exposing the problem with real facts.

    Thanks.

    Best regards

Picked up my iMac after repair... They had me sign a authorization for $28 - but did not charge it when I picked it up after repair completion... maybe they read this post or it was just to keep me informed that they may charge $28.
