Q: Bitdefender - how long does it take to scan entire system?

Been advised to do this, that's fine. It's been running half an hour. Does anyone know how long it'll take in total? I'm not a huge fan of leaving my Mac on overnight but I will if I have to. Any advice gratefully received.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Where’s here? It’s a sunny and cold morning in London…

Am going to read that (tho some of the screen grabs are missing) when I gave have time but I was advised to install MPlayerX by Apple - I deleted it from Applications. I’ve downloaded Thomas’s tool.

I don’t think I did install it - if I search in Spotlight JavaScript comes up but not Java. I did that Terminal thing and it said command not found so I think I’m ok.

I went to the Chrome plugins page and there was no Java on it. So that’s one thing out of the way! Should I just get rid of Bitdefender now I've downloaded The Safe Mac?

I lasted a short time using Safari - it’s awful. So let me ask. Do I still need to disable Java on it even tho I don’t use it? I’m back on Chrome so - which plugin should I disable? Apologies for being so thick. I know more about Macs than your average person on the street and WAY less than everyone here

Stop using Chrome, it is ancient and badly written 32 bit junk running on your 64bit machine

If you want to load your Mac with junk the results will be as you have seen. Your 'tech' friends give you very poor advice, keep them as friends, not tech advisors.

    Understood, re friends

The problem is that Safari is awful. It's just a personal thing, perhaps everyone else hates it, but I love Chrome. Don't ask me why, I just really like how it runs and works. Even the shortcuts on Safari (like switching between tabs, which I do a lot) are terribly designed. You can't even hit the Back button <--- and go to a previous page, it has to be Cmd + <. It's unwieldy. But I know that Chrome takes up more RAM. I should persevere with Safari, I know, but it'll take a lot of work to get used to...

Below is a screen shot of Library/Mail. Should I be going in here and deleting messages or does just emptying Trash do this? Am about to run the Safe Mac. Should I delete Bitdefender? The blurry bits are me excising the client name. Screen Shot 2014-08-30 at 12.53.41.png

ALSO, sorry to report in on every little thing but I ran Safe Mac and it removed 2 things: Spigot and FkCodec. What are these? Do I need to worry? How often should I run Safe Mac? All these annoying questions, apologies

MPLAYERX  is malware, who exactly advised you to install it, and why?

Thomas site can advise on removal,

If you are going to continue to download junk I would suggest running it everyday. If you can curb your habits a bit then once a month.

I am not sure what you mean by the fact that you can't use the back button to go back a page on Safari. I assume you mean the delete key on the keyboard which I think on windows system has been used to go back a page. I have never used a keyboard button go back a page. I used to just use the back arrow which in Safari is in the top left corner however since I have gotten the Macbook Pro, I have never used the back button in Safari. It is much simpler and easier to use two fingers to swipe the trackpad to the right to go back a page or the left to go forward a page (Unless there is nothing to go back to or forward to ).

I love that the new magic pad on the Mac so much that I get frustrated when I am working on a client's Windows laptop and won't let me scroll or drag with the two or three fingers. I can't even get the context menu up. It drives me up the wall and then I realize wait, I am back in the primitive age again, I have to remember I am on a PC and have to use the right button for context menu and I will have to hold the left button to drag.  Some of the systems had a vertical and sometimes horizontal scroll area on the trackpad but its just not the same. That plus all the viruses I have had to remove from client's laptop make me appreciate my Mac even more. (Trust me cleaning a Virus off a Windows system can be a pain in the neck sometimes.)

Silicon Valley California where it's always sunny.

Am going to read that (tho some of the screen grabs are missing)

There was something wrong with all the screenshots on the ASC last night, including yours. It's fixed now

Agree. It's clear you don't have Java installed, but don't count on Spotlight to find system level software, it doesn't look for things there unless you specifically tell it to. Best tools for search are EasyFind and Find Any File, both available from the AppStore or developer's web site. The latter even has some tips on what you need at the bottom of this page.

Should I just get rid of Bitdefender now I've downloaded The Safe Mac?

They do different things. BitDefender primarily protects you against malware, but only if you somehow managed to get it past the built-in OS X protection. TSM's Adware Removal Tool only addresses adware that you installed.

Depending on who's version and where it's downloaded from, it can at least include adware, but I've had the one from mplayerx.org for a long time and has been problem free.

I thought I covered this, but in any case, never use the Finder or any A-V software to move or delete anything from these folders. ONLY use Apple Mail to delete messages.

    Should I delete Bitdefender?

That's a decision you need to make for yourself. Don't listen to anybody here who says that nobody need A-V software, because some people do. Just don't think it's going to make you any less vulnerable to being attacked, because it won't find anything new until it's too late. It's not going to allow you to be less careful of the sites you visit or the stuff you download. But if you just want to have something to check periodically when you aren't doing anything important or checkout a file from somebody you don't know, then it will be there ready to use. Just disable it's real-time scan capability so it won't slow down your computer or worse unnecessarily. Open BitDefender Preferences->General and make sure "Open Bitdefender at login" is not checked.

I will comment that there is better A-V software available, most free, but I refrain from making any specific recommendations since I do unreimbursed tech support on Mark Allan's ClamXav Forum (a UK developer).  I personally have half a dozen A-V scanners installed, but none are active. I only use them for testing purposes. A couple of comparison testing sites are The Safe Mac's Mac anti-virus testing 2014 and SecuritySpread's Detection Rate Results.

Most variants around the web lately are malware bundles, unless you're careful what you download (and who is) you may get one.

    Exactly what I meant.
