Q: Thunderbolt Display Flickering Epidemic - Extensive Testing

I've personally spent about 400 miles of driving back and forth to my closest Apple Store, hours and hours of time, and multiple repairs on this issue.  I then replaced all of my hardware!  Add that to the various threads on this topic that total over about 500,000 views, and it's clear there's an issue here.  I'll try to keep this post pithy, with the facts here at the top.

This problem started with a 1.5 year old 15" Retina MacBook Pro and Thunderbolt Display.  I now have a brand new Apple Thunderbolt Display AND brand new 15" MacBook Pro - AND HAVE THE SAME FLICKERING PROBLEM!

Steps Taken

  1. Many, many phone calls to AppleCare.  No clear "yes we've seen this before and know how to fix" type of response.
  2. Many visits to the closest repair facility to me, which is the Genius Bar at an Apple Retail store.  Again, I worked with about a half a dozen people there, and no one reported "yes, we've seen this and know how to fix this.".
  3. After replacing the LED panel, I drove 40 miles back home, plugged in the display, and it was totally dead.
  4. After driving BACK to the Apple Store, they told me they would have to try another repair.  As I was leaving, the Manager asked me if I was okay, I explained my issue, and in an awesome show of understanding, he replaced my display right there.
  5. I took a brand new Thunderbolt Display home, and I STILL had the flicker problem.
  6. In a second act of desperation, I bought a BRAND NEW 15" Retina MacBook Pro!!  (going to sell my 2012 model to a friend)

After ALL of this, I'm sitting here with 100% new Apple hardware and the display still flickers!  This is maddening.  I've made no OS X setting changes.  Everything is 100% factory default new, and my Thunderbolt Display has flickered about 20 times, and is now totally dark.  (as I've typed this)

Other Notes

  • A very basic setup.  Just my 15" MacBook Pro and Thunderbolt Display.  I keep the Mac lid open and use both screens in extended mode.
  • My MacBook Pro resolution is set to "scaled" at the "looks like 1680 x 1050" option.  But I've tried the recommended option as well.
  • I've replaced the MagSafe connector.  (I've read some posts that a bad connector was the theoretical culprit)
  • Display flickers and goes dark, but the USB ports still work.  (I have a wired Apple USB keyboard plugged into it.)
  • The display resolution settings are factory default.
  • I've tried adjusting brightness settings, spaces settings, and arrangement settings.  Nothing works.
  • I've tried Apple's recommended SMC reset and PMU reset procedures.  No changes.
  • This all started when I upgraded to Mavericks.  I really think this could be the issue.

Anyone have any other thoughts??!?!?  Am I missing something?!?!?

I purchased the 0.5M Apple Thuderbolt cable, connected it from my MBP to the display, and am now 2 days running with no issues.

So in my case (which has been extensively tested), bypassing the built in cable fixed the issue.

I'm still going to take the display to Apple though, as the integrated TB display cable should work.  Especially for a $1,000 display.

I'm having the same issue, but less flickering and more just going dark randomly.  The funny thing is that to get it back, I have to unplug the screen from the wall as well as the laptop and leave it that way for some time ... havne't timed it but severl min to an hour does the trick ... and then it's fine for another hour and goes dark.

I was thinking this might be a video card issue?  but I will try the external cable trick.

Have you made any other progress with it since April?

Magpie, this was absolutely the same issue that I struggled with, and the cable was the culprit.  After much hassle, Apple sent a technician to my house, he replaced the cable, and the display has been 100% functioning properly since.

how did you convince them to send a tech? usually only seen that if you have a true 'desktop' machine like a mini or mac pro

i suspect you just told him how many times you've already driven back 'n forth, and they made an exception?

Thanks for the information.  I've had the same flickering issue and have decided to try what you did.  I've connected my new MacBook Pro Retina directly to the display.

I'll let all of you know what happens.

Me too. Bypass the Thunderbolt display and connecting my rMBP with the 0,5mt Apple Thunderbolt Cable from the Apple Store is the solution. The problem is the integrated Thundelbolt cable or soft. I have this problem since Mavericks 10.9.2.

REGARDING: "I'll let all of you know what happens."

The direct connection ended the problem - 3 days without any flickering or other issues whatsoever.

    Thanks again

So it does look like a faulty video cable. You'd think that after paying £900 for a screen, that it would work just fine.

Many Thanks Tim and macfromage for confirming, at lkeast we know where the problem lies now.

I am having the same issue. 15" macbook pro and 27" Thunderbolt display.  Been to the Apple Service Center 2x and replaced everything but the display.  still flickering.  I tried using a alt TB 0.5 cable but still flickering.  Apple should announce something as it's cost me $250 so far to replace parts that appear to have been perfectly fine.  I don't know what options i have left as replacing the display is foolish, might aw well just buy a new monitor.  If it's software, and suspect it is, i'm only going to remain frustrated when the flickering returns on a new unit.

suggestions?  Parts are still under warranty so i'm definitely taking it back in.

EXCELLENT - Thank you for posting this question and the comment(s) here.  The screen flickering issue has been driving me nuts.  It happened with my 2012 MBP, then again with my 2013 MBP - and I was at a loss.  I have a screen at home and one at work, and they both flicker.  One is less frequent than the other.  In either case, connecting with a separate Thunberbolt cable did the trick!

Both my monitors are out of warrantee, so its too late to bring my screen back for a cable replacement (unless I pay for the repairs).  I guess this separate cable will have to do the trick.

    Thanks again!

I have exactly the same problem with my Apple Thunderbolt Display (27 inches), the problem started appearing right after I did apply the firmware update V1.2 to the monitor which was made available by Apple last November (my monitor was working flawlessly before applying this firmware update so I am pretty sure there is something wrong with this firmware version and this is the cause of the problem). Does anyone here did apply this firmware as well?

So it's 2015 and this is still happening to people. I have a late 2013 macbook pro 15" retina with a Thunderbolt and this flickering and going blank happens to me randomly and it is MADDENING. It seems like it started right after upgrading to Yosemite from Mavericks. I'm on Yosemite 10.10.2 and applied all the firmware updates, etc. I can find.

I've resorted to turning off every screen saver, power saving feature, auto brightness, etc. and it still happens. Sometimes every 10 minutes or so the display flickers. If I move the mouse, it stops, but if I don't the display goes completely dark and I have to unconnect the displayport cable and plug it back. Of course all my windows resize on me when I do this.

I have resorted to leaving the macbook screen open and mirroring to the thunderbolt, but this is ridiculous. I paid over $5,000K for all this stuff and it all of a sudden just stops working?? Way to go Apple. This seems like so clearly a software or OS issue. It's like the computer is trying to go to sleep and does it anyway, but won't wake back up.

I hate this so much I'm actually thinking what to do. I used to love Apple products but stuff like this makes me think I should invest my time and money in windows. I will try the replacement cable thing, and take the display to the apple store, but sounds like others haven't had any luck with that. I'm really ****** this interrupts my work DAILY and I just can't justify supporting a company that stays silent on things like this. Buying replacement equipment just makes me even madder. Apple stuff used to just work. Period.

I've had this problem with 2 Thunderbolt displays - both not new, but both plugged into a new Mac Pro (MacPro6,1).  I've been kicking it around for a while; the second display seemed to work much better but is now "showing signs" of flickering (blanking off for 2-3 seconds several times per day).

Reason I'm adding this: it appears that somewhere this is being seen - see Apple Thunderbolt Display: Image on display intermittently goes dark, USB devices not available after waking from sleep …  The date on this seems indicate that it's a new article (3 March 2015) so perhaps the problem has bubbled up to some extent.

And, yes, there's nothing particularly helpful in this, but maybe it means they are getting around to acknowledging the issue...

I called apple support with several issues. They arranged to call me back and didn't. I called escalated it to a call center supervisor and he said someone would call, they did. But then the original support person who spent several hours on the phone became available and was going to call me. They didn't. I did get several emails back and forth arranging times and now nothing. Silence. I am frustrated with this. I first called because I suspected a hack or something taking photos on my mac pro (late 2013), but that's not it. I can run for a week offline and still randomly it 'blinks'. It's creepy. And I"m about out of warrantee on this monitor. Anyway, I have this issue too like so many others. I've run all the firmware updates and confirmed and redone them. I've stripped my machine bare, reinstalled the os. I have NOT tried getting Apple to replace the cable on the monitor. But looks like some people are having success with that. I'm going to by an external cable and see if that works. If that is the solution, then apple got screwed by whomever made those parts for them and should issue replacements to anyone who purchased a thunderbolt display. They did that on the iPhone power supplies a few years ago. That was honorable. They should do it now for this problem.
