Q: How to I get more memory so I can upgrade?

I want to upgrade to maverick so I can run programs again but I am unable to because it says that I do not have enough memory.  We have backed up our system 2 times and it still will not let us upgrade. So I have to buy something ?

iMac 7.1s can be upgraded to a max of 6 Gigs of RAM.

I have a late 2008 13" MacBook OS X, version 10.6.8, Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I added more memory awhile back so have: 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I would like to upgrade to Maverick ~ am I wishful thinking? When I review the requirements for the upgrade, it appears I have them ~ or am I wrong? My iTunes is version 11.3.1 and I have iPhoto '11. If I can't upgrade to Maverick, what would you suggest? I would love to get Safari back!

    Thanks for your help.

You can run Mavericks with your Mac, if you just want Safari I will ask what happened to the copy that came with 10.6.8?

4GB of ram is enough to install Mavericks (free install from 10.6.8).

Depending on what apps you run, you may need more ram, but a lot of us run with 4GB, since Mavericks is very efficient in using and allocating ram.

Because Apple stopped supporting Snow Leopard, I no longer had security support from Apple, and I could not update Safari so many websites stopped responding. Even Google popped back to the old Google image search which is terrible! After reading several Apple forums, I deleted Safari. I have my disc and can put it back on, but without security support is that wise?

I went to the Apple iTunes App store and tried several times to download the free Maverick, but continue to get the following message: We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer. Am I getting this message because the free download from Apple is Maverick version 10.9.4 vs 10.9? Do I need to purchase Maverick 10.9, then do the free download? I understood because Apple stopped supporting Snow Leopard 10.6.8 therefore you could not update Safari, they were offering this free Maverick download. I tried and tried to update Safari to no avail. My computer continued to say I had the latest Safari update which was Safari 5.1.10.

You should be able to upgrade, please tell me exactly which Mac you have, the model identifier (it will be in this form 5,1 or 5,3 etc)

4.1s are limited to Lion and 6 gigs RAM as a max.

You would need a 5.1 to upgrade to Mavericks.

Your Mac is too old, you can only upgrade to Lion (10.7)

The other issue I had is Time Machine stopped working. In fact, my MacBook doesn’t even recognize Time Machine. Will this be repaired should I upgrade to Lion 10.7 (with upgrades to 10.7.5)?

The 5.1.1 Safari security update is from 2013 !

" support stopped for SnowLeopard", Security updates not stopped altogether.
