Q: Why is the talking clock still telling me time when disabled?

Dont know why, but a few months ago (I was using ML back then, now using Mavericks) I enabled on the hour speaking clock by going to Sys Preferences > Date & Time > Clock > Announce The Time

All was fine until I decided to turn it off (it keeps going on right through the night during my backups!)

I've disabled it and it still announces the time!

I've tried reactivating it, closing sysprefs, restarting, deactivate it, restart it etc no win

Also tried running:

defaults write ./com.apple.speech.synthesis.general.prefs TimeAnnouncementPrefs -dict TimeAnnouncementsEnabled -bool NO

If you change the period to "on the quarter hour" and disable - it speaks every quarter hour - its like it doesnt respect the disable flag.

Is there a prefs file I can manually edit at all?

    Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm having the same issue. Speaking clock won't stop speaking.

    Sadly I have the opposite problem.  You can try to "read" the preferences.  Mine say it's enabled:

    $ defaults read  ./com.apple.speech.synthesis.general.prefs TimeAnnouncementPrefs

    {

        TimeAnnouncementsEnabled = 1;

        TimeAnnouncementsVoiceSettings =     {

            VoiceIdentifier = "com.apple.speech.synthesis.voice.kyoko.premium";

        };

    }

    $

    Do I have to pay for another app, and then install it and then try to figure it out, just so that this bug gets sorted out??? This seems to be the solution for any bug on Mac OS Mavericks - install another app to fix the bugs...

    It's super annoying the hysterical voice to announce the time every 15 minutes. I can't watch a movie or listen to music or listen to anything for that matter, as the insane hysterical voice comes up every 15 minutes with vol up to the max. Yes I did turn it on myself, but it was a joke. We laughed a couple of times...  Little did I know that this setting is permanent. Now it's just tragic and I'm avoiding my macbook at all cost for any entertainment..Screen Shot 2014-08-31 at 7.22.53 PM.png

    Turning the voice-over announcement ON or OFF makes no difference to this guy. Is there any other way to enable the voice outside of the Date&Time Settings?

    Check if other user is enable it..!!

    it seems that the announce is played in all users if one of them enable it.

    Thanks! Yes, this solved it. I had logged in to the admin account earlier. Even though I was using my personal account, it was still speaking the time.
