Q: iPhoto albums and faces

Hi,

So about a month ago I created a smart album in iPhoto and set it up to sync with my iPhone. It worked perfectly. However, a couple of days ago, I started updating the "Faces" of my photos and from that moment on my iPhone not only synced the desired album, but also a new album named "Faces" in which appear the exact same photos from the desired album. Moreover, the "Faces" album is categorized or separated in the names of the people that appear in the original album.

Just to make sure I made my point:

- At first I only had one album called "Album1" in which I had photos of John, Jack and Amy. Now, out of nowhere, I have "Album1" and "Faces" which itself is divided in 3 albums named "John", "Jack" and "Amy" and they all contain replicates of the photos in Album1 in which each person appears.

I haven't been able to find the setting that enables this or disables this. Does anyone know how can I avoid this from happening?

Thanks,

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

    Are you syncing with iTunes?

What are your settings in iTunes, in the Photos tab for for your iPhone?

Have you selected "Selected albums"? Scroll down below the albums and events listing and disable the Faces.

    I do not understand

and since in iPhoto on the Mac (the subject of this forum) it is not possible to have nested albums I do not follow at all - you can have a folder with albums in it but you can not have albums within albums

Please describe again what you are seeing and what you have

Yea, you're right about not being nested albums; its more like you said, a folder named "Faces" with 3 albums, each with the name of the people. I'll try to explain through screenshots... changed names to Ross, Joey and Chandler to make it easier to find photos.

So first here's Album1 in iPhoto... 9 photos, Smart Album created from keyword: Friends and all faces assigned.

    iPhoto.png

Now here are iTunes settings. Only Album1 selected to sync. No "faces" are selected to be synced.

    iTunes1.png

    iTunes2.png

Now here's my iPhone... Smart Album is there, just like intended. But there is also a "Faces" folder, and that folder contains the 3 people that appear in the Smart Album even though I don't want iPhone to sync those faces since they are duplicates!

That's the issue... too weird for me. Don't even know if this is iPhoto, iTunes or iPhone... sounds more on iPhoto's side, but don't know...

None of your photos are showing for me, sorry.

But I think, the problem is, that some of the photos in the one album you are syncing, contain faces labels. The Photos.app on your iPhone will use this information to create the faces albums. It is is automatic. Just like the Places labels will be used in the "Moments" view.  This does not create duplicate photos on your iPhone. The photo will be just added to several albums without requiring extra space.

Yea... they have the faces label because I need them in my iPhoto... When you say that "this does not create duplicate photos on your iPhone", do you mean that the photo that I see in Album1 and in Faces album (because I see them in both albums) is the same photo? Just like iPhoto won't duplicate the photo, just show it in both albums at once... which means that if the photo is 1Mb then it is not taking 2Mb?

Because in any case, if it is not taking up extra space from my iPhone, then it wouldn't such a big problem...

Yes, the photos are not duplicated. Just like on your mac the same photo can be shown in several different views in the Photos.app and in iPhoto on your iPhone.  Since I cannot see your screenshots, are you using iPhoto or the Photos.app on your iPhone?

Now the screenshots are showing, thanks.

The Faces albums are created automatically on your iPhone from the Faces tags on your photos. They do only require extra space for the tiny thumbnails, but the photos are not duplicated.

And there is no way of getting rid of the Faces album without taking away the Faces tags?

Looks like it. Making sure that no synced photo had a faces tag was the only way, I could make the Faces albums vanish.

I only tested with iPhoto 9.5.1, Aperture 3.5.1, and MacOS X 10.9.4 with iOS 7.1.2.
