Q: Bitdefender - how long does it take to scan entire system?

Been advised to do this, that's fine. It's been running half an hour. Does anyone know how long it'll take in total? I'm not a huge fan of leaving my Mac on overnight but I will if I have to. Any advice gratefully received.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Note: To uninstall Java 7, you must have Administrator privileges.

OP has Java 8, but suspect procedures are the same.

I did search for JavaAppletPlugin.plugin but it just said 'searching Applications' and got stuck. All pretty odd. I think, however, the Terminal thing worked - I just hadn't restarted System Prefs.

Whatever you do, don't start searching for and trashing everything with Java in it's name as most all of what's left is part of OS and would require you to re-install Mavericks.

ClamXav finished - I deleted the files (at least I think I did) and uninstalled it.

Was it ClamXav from the AppStore and did you uninstall it using LaunchPad as I previously outlined? Because otherwise there's more in ~/Library/ClamXav/.

On that panel Flash Player is there (I need that, I’m sure) and so is Perian, whatever that is.

Perian hasn't been supported since Snow Leopard and reportedly causes problems in Mavericks, so you should delete it (requires two steps):

    How do I remove Perian?

Open the System Preferences. Select the Perian pane and 'Remove.' Now 'Show All' preference panes, control-click the Perian pane and 'Remove "Perian" Preference Pane.'

Java in Syst Pref - too late. I got it out of the Preferences pane. It’s not in chrome://plugins, however, at all. In Firefox (I hardly use it) it’s not in the Add Ons —> Plugins list at all. In Safari, it’s not in the Security tab. Does that mean it’s all ok?

I’m afraid I did delete a few things with Java in it - this was stupid. How can I check if I’ve done any damage to Mavericks?

Yes it was ClamXav from the App Store and I think I uninstalled it properly. I searched for it in EasyFind and nothing’s there.

Perian - I opened Syst P and control clicked it (the second step), I seem to have missed the first, However, I did use EasyFind to delete everything from Library/Caches. While in there I found Oracle Java (and Growl) stuff and deleted that too.

Question - what is iSkySoft and do I need it?

I think you said you used Terminal to get rid of it in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins which was actually all you were supposed to remove. I suspect removing those other items will simply prevent you from re-installing it if you should ever need it for an application or your browser, but difficult to say. Re-installing from the Recovery HD is the only sure way of restoring them.

What! I'm finding it increasingly difficult to help when you don't follow the developers specific instructions. I have no idea what the "Remove" button does. Looks like there should be a /Library/Quicktime/Perian.component file.

what is iSkySoft and do I need it?

No idea. I'll have to look into it tomorrow.

    Please stop deleting things.

At this stage I would suggest (at least) reinstalling the latest OSX update (10.9.4) from the combo. Then leave your Mac alone.

OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)

Apologies - the issue is that I’m not being specific about what I’m doing, not that I can’t follow instruction. I opened Syst Pref, Ctrl and trackpad clicked on Perian ‘Remove Perian Preference Pane’ came up and I clicked it and it went. I then found the other bits in EasyFind and deleted them also. I went to Quicktime and deleted the component also.

This may be a stupid question (I know) but when I go to a site and it says 'realplayer is required to display some elements on this page' I should just not do it, it's not worth it, right? Example, I was looking at this: http://www.nickdrakefilm.com/ and that prompt came up. But realplayer is to be avoided, right?

I have not heard that RealPlayer was bad (I can hardly believe that it is still in use frankly) so it's up to you. But that is an ancient technology

I thought the same - it's the first time I've come across a site that told me to download it. I have no need to download it! Did the update, all seems well.

Now just use your Mac for a while, post back if anything seems odd.

    Enjoy it
