Q: Relationship between Contacts "on my mac" and in "iCloud"

Can someone explain to me the relationship between Contacts "On My Mac" and those in iCloud?

Ideally, shouldn't they be identical?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

    Yes, when configured correctly.

If you add/edit/delete on Mac the changes will automatically updated on iCloud/Contacts, and vice versa.

No, they are entirely separate accounts. On My Mac is local, it does not synchronize with iCloud (or much else come to that) iCloud is an online account, available to any client, an iPhone or a Mac etc.

The first time that you activate iCloud contacts will cause the contents of the On My Mac account to be moved to the iCloud account, there is no connection between the 2 after that. (The contacts in iCloud will be moved back to the On My Mac account when/if you sign out of iCloud)
