Q: Bitdefender - how long does it take to scan entire system?

Been advised to do this, that's fine. It's been running half an hour. Does anyone know how long it'll take in total? I'm not a huge fan of leaving my Mac on overnight but I will if I have to. Any advice gratefully received.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I already answered that, they are emails, and finding them in a mail subfolder is quite normal.

You choose to have a 3rd party email account attached to your Mac, expect to find emails (emlx) files on your Mac because of it

    Getting any work done lately?

Fair enough. And yes, I'm a proofreader and just finished a 16,000 word dissertation (on a very dull subject) - I type fast

I'm so jealous, I type as the glacier moves (and then have to back up and fix the errors)

So usually I just point at things

Ha! I'm an editor, be quick or don't get hired, that's the way it goes

Right now, following that horror of a document (they're always foreign students, the English level varies wildly), I'm taking a Daily Show break...

Fortunately my job is all about speed, so I rarely type anything  I have someone to do that for me and they can type like a whirlwind (without the mess) or I just yell

Your Mac is fine, your clint's emails will always be annoying but not dangerous to you, just don't click on offers to refinance, optimize, enlarge or protect anything. They are not what they seem.

Can I ask, where you are? For all I know you're some super famous concert promoter

Well yes, tho 99% of the spam crap I collect I never click on. These emlx things take up a bit of space, but if they're not doing anything they can be left...

Currently London, but I am a legend in my own living room

And I'm not a promoter, I'm a producer (I get the stuff the promoter is going to need to do the show, then we argue about how much it will cost)

emlx files are pretty small, unless space is getting short I would not worry.

I have a thing (an obsession, even a fetish) for how shows (especially music) are put together. I'm about to see Kate Bush and that production, well, you must have heard about it (for all I know you did it). Sounds like both an exhausting and fun job.

Yes, I've got plenty of space, so that's not going to be a thing, probably ever.

For me it is a liability, I find it very difficult just to go and see a show without listing in my head everything I would not have done that way, it makes it difficult to enjoy the show, however good. I went to see (as a paying customer) Phantom of the Opera. During an early scene a cast member stepped on the edge of a footlight, it moved, leaving a small patch of light where there should have been none. I waited through innumerable opportunities to fix it but no one did. That error is my main recollection of the show.

My love of how things work has stopped me from enjoying a great many films, TV shows. But gigs, I'm lucky, I usually just lose myself, if the performer is engaging enough. (I write about gigs here, feel free to click should you fancy a look: http://liztray.com/LT/files/category-gigs.html). My equivalent is that I cannot read anything at all without seeing the errors. From menus to websites to magazines to newspapers - everything. I can't read words like a normal

    person anymore!

I might say you got what you deserved for seeing Phantom I love musicals but Lloyd Webber (JC Superstar) aside leaves me a bit cold. It must have been hugely annoying to be distracted by the footlight error, you couldn't help but see it constantly out of the corner of your eye...

It was the Michael Crawford one, and I had 3 teenage girls all taking theatre/drama. I had no choice but to take them (we went backstage after the show so they could see how cool I was) I would rather have seen Kate (who I did work with once, in 1977) when neither of us knew what came next. Please note that the girls weren't mine, their mums made me do it.

I'll read your blog, thanks. And I will endeavour to keep my writing error free.

It was of its time! And Crawford is particularly watchable. I can't think of anything more nightmarish, however, than taking teen girls on a field trip (even a cool one). I still feel rather in disbelief that I'll see KB on a stage. I've seen really a lot of great shows (as you'll see from the blog), with Bowie being my favourite performer so far but I think she might give him a run for his money...

Oh the internet, the extent of errors is gargantuan. Your writing is pretty perfect

It was mixed, the girls certainly had a good time. My main issue was the backseat of my car was full of long legs and short skirts. I had to stop using the rearview mirror and just hope that nothing was coming when I pulled out (choosing the safe words gets harder every year)

I liked your Patti Smith piece, keep em coming, consider yourself bookmarked

Har! It was a different time, as all those men from my 1980s childhood who are now in jail are wont to say (for me the worst one is Stuart Hall, I loved that guy! A fellow Manc, a fellow blue. Sheesh).

That's lovely of you to say, I appreciate it. Obviously I don't review every gig I see (I have a list on FB of all the gigs I've been to, it's heading for 300 shortly, which is not bad for a 37 year old) but the ones that captured the imagination are mostly on the site. The older ones are, as with anything done years ago, full of faintly embarrassing writing, but c'est la vie!

Although most of my work lately (since I retired ) is politics and business Rock and Roll is where my heart still lies. And the best show I ever did was for John Hiatt and the Bald Men. In Chicago (in Grant Park) it was 'An evening with John' a 2 hour set (but it went long). The weather was terrible, steel grey clouds over the lake with ominous lights far in the distance. We pushed the band upstage to keep them (and the equipment) dry, John yelled and we put them back where they started, John walked to the apron and raised his fist to the sky yelling "You wait until I say so" The set was stunning, a full power old style rock band turned up (11).

The weather stayed threatening, but held back, the atmosphere was so heavy with electricity from the storm that everyone was energised by it. Hiatt started the last song of the set (Perfectly Good Guitar), almost at the end of the song John stopped, looked up at the sky and said "this is your cue" and the storm hit with a flash and a clap of thunder that rattled the city.

An old stage hand looked at me and said 'can you do that again'

    I love rock and roll.

If you don't know Hiatt google for "Perfectly Good Guitar" (a live version) and although not entirely SFW, check for "Since his P*n*s came between us"
