Q: Bitdefender - how long does it take to scan entire system?

Been advised to do this, that's fine. It's been running half an hour. Does anyone know how long it'll take in total? I'm not a huge fan of leaving my Mac on overnight but I will if I have to. Any advice gratefully received.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

So you retired from rock shows but still produce politic/business conferences? I’ve never been to Chicago but I do hear the weather is changeable, to say the least. I’ve heard that from bands before - a kind of ‘you get wet, we get wet’ audience solidarity. There’s nothing like a show in a thunderstorm. You know you’re in this special place with everyone, not thinking about how awful it’s going to be after the show’s over and you have to find your way home with clothes that weigh twice as much as they should.

Plus, Hiatt’s a pretty tough guy. I know him - one of my dad’s faves, he’s seen him many times - we went to see him at the Dominion Theatre about 10 years ago, maybe a little less. Fantastic show - and what a songwriter! In my teens I fell in love with Don’t Look Any Further because it was central to an X-Files episode!

Man, would I love to see a list of the shows you've been to, or even just a top 5 gigs?

My son is a performer, and he lives in London, I however live in Chicago. I am over here in London for a while overseeing the launch of his first Asian tour (or as he puts it, cheap labor). While I'm here I am doing a few other things (business meetings mainly). I am supposed to be retired but you know what they say about old rockers.

A showlist is not for publication here. Maybe I'll see if there is a way to send you stuff from your blogsite.

But I will say that the range runs from Placido Domingo, to Slayer.

I have seen Chicago so hot that people died and so cold that they did not decompose, it is an extraordinary city, with the best music in the USA.

See this pic, bc it’s why I ask. I emptied all 3 boxes (Inbox, Sent, Trash) yesterday but these little emlx files are still hanging around. Should I delete them? Or are they doing no harm? http://tinypic.com/r/2j34f2b/8

    Leave them alone!

Perform Rebuild Mailboxes for each of those mailboxes in turn.

If that doesn't help then Reindex messages.

I will leave the emlx files alone - it's no problem if they just build up? Did a Rebuild Mailbox

How exciting that your son is doing a big tour; I have a cousin in a band (a Rage Against the Machine-style group called Senser) and they're always hopping around Europe playing metal festivals. It all looks a bit exhausting, especially the travelling. My email addy is on my website, feel free to use it

I've been to the US 16 times. Mostly NYC and LA, a trip to SF, and Florida, but never Chicago. I love jazz and blues so it would be quite the mecca to visit. Placido to Slayer sounds like a potential collaboration, like Metallica and Lou. Then again, maybe not

This may be a daft question... could anything we've done here, or that I've done, have affected Citrix? I'm sure not but I can't log in today and that's never happened before. I'm into the client's WorkAnywhere site. But Citrix just won't load and comes up with this prompt:  http://tinypic.com/r/2z7093p/8 Now it won't even get that far, I click on the link that usually launches Citrix and nothing happens. Eep.

    Citrix requires Java.

I suggest that you reinstall the Citrix client which should reinstall Java. If not there is a note on the Citrix Site about it.

Oh. Crap. I downloaded Citrix again and reinstalled - made no difference. How do I put Java back? :-/

I will assume that Citrix requires the most current version of Java so download it here: https://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Restart after the installation (even though it may say that you do not need to) and quit Safari while the installer runs.

Yes, it's his first large tour, it's going to be great.

You must go to Chicago, go during BluesFest (usually first weekend in June), you'll love it.

Thanks for the heads up on the address.

I would love to - it's on my bucket list, along with a tour of the South. I'd love to go to New Orleans. I recently went to the Montreux Jazz Fest, what an experience! Got to see Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Next gig is Kate Bush of course, and even tho I've reed reviews I still feel like it'll dazzle me with surprises.

That's the part I warned you about earlier. Some of the Java files you removed that were part of OS X would have told you that you needed to re-install Java.

Well, it's back in now - tho should I ask what else, Citrix aside, needs it to work? Did my weekly Safe Mac scan, nothing found, so that's good. Doing a Bitdefender critical locations scan, which I've never done before, so we'll see how that goes. All email in Mail now deleted after collection. All feels a bit safer now.

I'm sorry to be back again but it's a Time Machine problem now :-/ It's stuck on Preparing Backup. This has happened before but this is the longest it's ever been. I took a screen grab of Preferences, http://tinypic.com/r/2rdkscg/8. The drive, Western Digital, has a white light that is flashing, but this only just restarted after being solid. If it's not one thing, it's another! Perhaps the drive is knackered... any ideas?
