Q: Ken Burns effects on the new Final Cut Pro X

I'm trying to evaluate wheather to buy new equipment to upgrade to the Final Cut Pro X. I have done a fair amount of editing with the Final Cut Express using the Ken Burns motion effects and have a lot more work to do. It appears that the new system doesn't allow the user to create very complex motion paths. Is it limited to a pan in pan out effect? [I no longer see a Viewer - rather merely what appears to be a Canvas screen. Can you still set key frames?]

Yes. Anything, pretty much, you can do in FCE you can do in X.

Thank you for answering my question. When I was at the Apple Store looking at a new system, I had shown them a fairly lengthy segment of some of the work that I had done with FCE. The suggestion for me was to just use i-Movie. Having had experience with i-Movie I knew that that would not work.  When I looked at the demo that the people had run with FCPX I couldn't see how to do the motion effects and they did not address the issue. I had requested that one of the video trainers be present. They could not arrange that - hence my trip around the block - several times on this question.
I recently had a chance to speak with Apple Tech support  - [specifically the people who work with FCPX] - and they explained that Final Cut Pro X now defers the motion effects to a separate stand alone application called Motion. They said that that software will do everything that I need to do. I believe that I can continue my work with the new system on a newer Mac. Thanks again for your input.

I don't know what motion effects you were doing in FCE, but any that could be done in FCE can be done in FCPX, and probably more easily. Motion is not required for any motion effect that FCE was capable of.

May I ask which store you went to?
