Q: Logic CPU meter overloading

The Logic CPU meter overloads as soon as I add just one software instrument track and insert any new instrument into that track (even in new project)

It happens using Logic X or Logic 9, and Audio tracks are no problem.

Then if I open up the CPU meter properties, it appears to be just 1 of the 2 meters overloading (right hand meter)

I previously thought it might be a Mavericks problem, so went back to Mountain Lion 10.8.5 but still have the problem.

I remember reading something about the Core Audio settings so maybe it could be this ???

I even tried re-installing Logic X but no difference. Although I now have 2 versions of Logic X and Logic 9 on same Mac, so maybe thats not helping!

many thanks in advance

No.. both LPX and LP9 can happily coexist on a single Mac without issue...

Then if I open up the CPU meter properties, it appears to be just 1 of the 2 meters overloading (right hand meter)

Make sure you quit all other apps running at the same time including background tasks...

    Other than that....

    What are your Mac's model/specs?

Have you read the support document regarding this?

What is the preferences/audio  I/O buffer set at?

Don't forget, effect plugins use CPU as well.

Many Thanks guys - Fixed it!

Just shut down internet (Firefox) and Mail and its fine as long as I have nothing else running. You wouldn't think they would eat so much CPU.

Yes I had changed the buffer settings etc and no difference. Although I never got any overload messages, just meter showing too much activity then maxing out and you could hear the sound distorting. Hope this might help anyone else having the same problem in future, thanks again.

    Hi Tim,

You are the third person recently, who has had a similar problem that is apparently caused by Firefox and certain browser plugins, running in the background...

I'll add that one to my references notes... for others having any similar issues.

Mail, too can be a little bit of a resource hog....  particularly if using WiFi to connect to the net.... Not sure exactly why that may be yet.. but again, it's been reported on a couple of occasions here and elsewhere..

Anyhow, glad you identified the issue and for posting back here.. As always much appreciated....

    Cheers..

Hi Nigel, thanks for the extra info.

Interesting you should say that about Firefox, because an additional problem just for the last few days, is that Firefox was crashing, or Logic was crashing, or the whole Mac was crashing - all since Firefox did an auto update!

UPDATE - I still have this problem, nothing to do with Firefox or other apps open.

I'm thinking it could be a corrupt file in Logic.

Have changed all the settings (buffer etc) many times but makes no difference
