Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks my Macbook Pro (mid 2009) system has been acting up...it's running hot, the trackpad is balky and indeterminate in it's operation...links are selected that I don't select and others are hard to activate, etd...overall the system is now becomes very slow when taxed at all..(video)

and I would appreciate someone here that perhaps knows more than I taking a look at my system state via the etraCheck data below and perhaps make a few suggestion as to how to imiprove my current Mac experience. Thank you!  (Ran)

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

    Hi Linc,

    Step 1: Guest Login Operation

It seemed a bit smoother operationally but the fan came on to about 3500 rpm both re-start intervals

so it's getting hot and frankly I would require more time to really be able to tell as the trackpad issue

is intermittent and the slowness, well how does one track that?  :-)

    Step 2: Incompatible Login Itmes:

Note the 2 (nearly) identical Adobe items (both hidden but one see as an app. and one in marked unknown)

Perhaps I have more than one copy of AdobeReader active?

I'm not sure as to the  others Dropbox forced it's way and I don't need it....same with Tuneup and DigiDo

and also the sppechSyntheseisServer,  I am at a loss as to what this is: apple-scc-20121015-114643      Unknown

I had this issue. I resolved it by doing a Safari reset. Try this simple fix first before anything else.

You also have adware on that Mac (the genieo stuff): http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/

And definitely get rid of TuneUpMyMac.

    Good morning Gentlemen,

As Linc suggested in his second test, the login items have all been removed.

Thank you James for the Safari tip...I have reset Safarii and that always seems to help.

Esquared: I ran the Adware removal tool and you were correct as there were 3 (including gennio) that were taken care of.

I can't seem to find the tuneup app. and will keep searching. If here willl remove of course.

Things are gettig a little better, bit by bit (no pun intended)

    Thanks everybody!

Sorry Linc it was Apple's further instructions that said to remove the loging items which I did...after noting them and testing as you suggested

(which showed a marked improvement in speed)...Not one of those login items appear to be necessary and the system is running smoothly

again. Unless you have further instructions or testing to perform...the trackpad issue is likely a battery starting to swell and I intend to

    replace it next week.

    Thanks again, everybody

    Linc, FYI

OS X Mavericks: If you think you have incompatible login items

Login items are apps that open automatically when you start up or log in to your Mac. Occasionally, a login item may cause a blank blue screen at startup or other problems.
Note: To print these instructions, open Help Viewer’s Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear), then choose Print.

    1. Shut down your Mac, wait 30 seconds, then hold down the Shift key while pressing the power button.
    2. When you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear), release the Shift key.
    3. If you are prompted to log in, type your password, then hold down the Shift key again as you click “Log in.”
    4. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
    5. Click your account’s name, then click Login Items.Make a list of the login items—you’ll need to remember them later.
    6. Select all of the login items, then click Delete (-).
    7. Choose Apple menu > Restart.

If this solves the problem, open Users & Groups preferences again and add the login items one at a time, restarting your Mac after adding each one, until the symptom occurs again. You don’t have to hold down any keys when you restart after adding each login item.

When you find the incompatible login item, use the procedure above to remove only that item.

You should never disable GateKeeper! It's easy enough to use non-AppStore or unsigned apps by simply right-clicking / Command-clicking the app and choosing "Open" from the Contextual Menu. That way you won't accidentally install something dangerous or annoying.

    I won't disable Gatekeeper MadMac...Thanks!

Also it appears that there was an incompatible or conflicting Adobe routine, apparently leftover from a earlier version that

I had deleted last year...as Reader seems to be working much better too now.

Just so anyone else that wishes to comment on the trackpad gone awry issue and wishes some specifics (talk about annoying!)

When I run my cursor over various links on a page it's as if I am holding down the selector (clicker) and thus at times the system

thinks I wish to open some (or all) of these links. I assume that this may be the battery swelling issue on a battery that Apple

installed when the first one didn't hold a charge initially and is just a few months out of warranty now. They won't replace it again.

Any other suggestions before I spend the $!40 to replace it would be most welcome...

    Again, thanks everybody!

But your EtreCheck information tells us that you have disabled it. You need to go to System Preferences->Security & Privacy->General, click the padlock if it's closed and change "Allow apps downloaded from:" back to at least "Mac App Store and identified developers".

I see now....I am very glad I don't have to let my Step Daughter use my MBP (i-tunes, etc) now that she has her own w/ Applecare.

Linc: My startup and shut down time on my computer is 75% faster now...I also found a conflict in the Adobe Flash settings/version.

I uninstalled Flash and then reinstalled the correct version.

I reset the SMC (as directed on this website) for my mid 2009 model with the charger hooked up and charging. I think I am going

to repair my disk permissions as well, as soon as I get a break...Do I do this in safe mode LInc or not?

I have no external drive to use or Time Machine as backup device but do have good internet access as to speed, etc...f..Is it now

possible to use a cloud somewhere (or some such) to backup my data via the internet?

Lastly, are there any more improvements I can make today from the data below folks?

Thanks MadMac for catching this....anything else amiss that you may see... ?

I ran Disk Utility (in safe mode) and repaired disk permissions on my HD (yet again) and without fail it always

comes up with the same 3 permission or group issues which, as you can see it repairs...that is until the next

time I repair permissions.....How can I fix these issues myself  and make sure the repair sticks??

Not to tax anyone's kindness as I'm greatly appreciative of the input given today and good results have been a blessing.

I also ran Activity Monitor just now and pulled a system diagnostic report and a spin dump if anyone wishes to view I can

    easlyl e-mail you the result.

After a brief shutdown and disconnect from the power adapter the fan has calmed down to a more reasonable 2,000 rpm.

The trackpad issue itself is all that presently remains of the original issue(s) Is it really my battery about to explode or?

    :-)

    Thanks again folks!
