Q: OSX Server 10.8 OD Master - OSX 10.6 OD Relplica

I have a 10.8 that is an OD master and is running fine. On the same network, there is an old 10.5 server connected to it as an OD replica.

I have just set up an xServe that was decommissioned that we want to use for mostly file sharing. The problem I am having is when I try to create an OD replica on the 10.6 server, I am getting stuck on the root password for the 10.8 OD master. I am sure I am typing it correctly but it keeps saying that the password I have entered is wrong.

The 10.5 server created the replica with no issue, the 10.6 server is being stubborn. I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Xserve, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 10.6 Srvr connect to 10.8 OD Master

". . . there is an old 10.5 server connected to it as an OD replica"

It may be connected to it but not as an OD Replica. You can connect the 10.6 Server to your 10.8 OD Master but that too won't be a Replica.

The 'rules' regarding OD Masters and Replicas are few the main one being all servers involved should all be the exact same OS versions. For example 10.8.4 server can't be a replica of a 10.8.5 Master. Another important aspect is DNS of course, which must be perfect.

"The 10.5 server created the replica with no issue, the 10.6 server is being stubborn. . . "

You're mistaken on both counts as neither will ever work with your version of the OD Master.

I'm afraid you do not have a OD master OD replica,  you've only joined your other server to the OD master

in a true master replica situation all OS must be the same and if the master goes down the replica takes over user authentication

In your situation, since it not a master replica setup, if your master server goes down your users will not be able to authenticate on the other server

if you want a master replica you'd have to update the servers to the same OS

As as to why you can't join the OD master try look at the log files on the OD master for any error messages

and try using OD admin login and password
