So do that (Time Machine) and post back.

If your machine shipped with Lion or later, boot into internet recovery mode, use Disk Utility to wipe the machine, and restore the OS. On first boot, use the Setup Assistant to migrate from the backup. If it shipped with SL or earlier, then use those install discs to reinstall the OS, followed by the Setup Assistant.
