I'm also curious what happens once the new user has made a purchase at iTunes Store? Meanwhile, all is well running iTunes 11.1.5 on 32-bit Vista with the same user account I've been using for years. Hoping the next iTunes update will resolve this issue.

Has the DEP issue been resolved for iTunes 11.4? I'd rather not have to re-downgrade if the issue isn't fixed.

    Hey Johnny DEP,

Apple should rename the recent versions "iTunes for Windows 7 and 8.1"! I hope I'm not the only Vista user who provided iTunes Feedback via the Help menu. Of course we know you have been through the wringer with Apple Support, Biggestted.

The problem is actually pretty simple and is a basic programming flaw. When you close iTunes the process does not stop and causes a buffer overrun. It is creeping into memory space that may be used by other programs or system processes so Windows shuts it down before it causes larger problems. This is usually due to what programmers call an "endless loop". It is when a programming routine never stops and keeps using memory until the system completely crashes.

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/sir/strategy/default.aspx#!section_3_3

"Data Execution Prevention (DEP): Buffer overflow attacks, in which an attacker forces a  program or component to store malicious code in an area of memory not intended  for it, are some of the most common exploits seen today. DEP is a Windows  feature that enables the system to mark one or more pages of memory as  non-executable. Marking memory regions as non-executable means that code cannot  be run from that region of memory, which makes it harder for exploits involving  buffer overruns to succeed."

For all of you who disable DEP, you are opening yourself to malicious attacks. Maybe this is so Apple can trick you into thinking their Operating System is better, maybe not. IMHO, they do not care if you are not using Apple hardware.

And let's face it folks: Vista is a memory hog compared to other Windows versions.

    Hi Lori_1991:

Could you please confirm that your OS is Windows Vista?  The topic being discussed in this thread is a Windows DEP error when iTunes v. 11.2.x to the latest v. 11.4.0 is closed on a system running Vista.

Sadly the definition of "the same issue" is often somewhat tortured on these forums.

    Hey Lori_1991,

Thanks for your input to this thread, can you please confirm whether you have ever had the problem of a DEP warning message popping up after simply closing iTunes 11.2 onward on a Windows Vista operating system?

    NOTE TO ALL OTHER SUFFERERS

I have just checked my system configuration through the msconfig window under the services tab and the Bonjour status is RUNNING.

My response is not specifically to tt2, i just can't seem to navigate to the last page of the thread whilst remaining "signed in" Grrr!

Getting a bit "hissed" off with all the wierd quirks in the world according to apple!

This sorry saga continues into the next itteration of IOS.

I've just updated iTunes prior to installing IOS8 on my iPad Retina 4th gen Tablet.

The install went surprisingly well....as far as I can currently tell, but I remain sceptical since they still have'nt managed to correct the miniscule problem which is causing the DEP exception.

This evening, I observed that my machine was using 1.56GB of RAM prior to iTunes being closed........

After closing iTunes RAM usage continued completely oblivious to the change until DEP intervened and it then took an instant dive to 0,936GB.

Proof, if any is needed that this software is poorly written and Apple have no intention of sorting it out.

    Disgraceful.

I'm also having the DEP issue, only on closing iTunes.  I recently wiped my hard drive clean and reinstalled the original Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) partition.  I went through all the updates, Service Packs, etc.  Got the system fully updated with no other software on it ... a blank slate, if you will.  I defragged the hard drive.  I did a completely new install of iTunes, choosing "Run as Administrator" to run the install file.  I let iTunes create a brand new library file from my music folders that reside on an external hard drive.

Basically, I started everything over from scratch ... And I'm getting that DEP error whenever I close iTunes.  But everything else seems to be working fine.

Are we all in agreement that this is mainly an annoyance, and doesn't affect the actual functioning of iTunes?

By the way, after completely reinstalling Vista ... it runs substantially quicker!

The DEP issue certainly doesn't appear to affect the functioning of iTunes, but I found it annoying enough to downgrade to iTunes 11.1.5 (which can be obtained at oldapps.com - but those running 64-bit Vista might have to roll back even further).

I wonder if creating a brand new library file leads to any complications that Vista users should be aware of? My library was mainly reconstituted from one of the old backups that iTunes automatically creates, with a few recent items added back in via File menu (however those were not iTunes Store purchases).

I Think that you are missing the point of the DEP warning.

It is telling you that unauthorised use of RAM has been detected whilst iTunes is active and, as I have observed, after the iTunes GUI is closed.

This is caused (hopefully) by sloppy programming by the almighty Apple, .....or it might be malware that has been invited in by the aforementioned sloppy programming.

DEP is just notifying you that it has cut this possibly nefarious activity off at the knees, so to speak, so whilst it doesn't impinge upon the functionality of iTunes, we should all be worried about what else this software might be up to besides delivering your media file content.
