Q: FCPX gets stuck - must use force quit

It already happened to me another time in the past.

FCPX 10.1.2 gets stuck while loading a project: the status bar on top of the window saying "Loading xxx project" shows the task is completed with a full blue bar but nothing happens and the panel doesn't go away. Only a few commands are available (not greyed out) in the menus; the Quit Final Cut Pro is available but I get a beep and nothing happens when I select this command. Only way to exit is to Force quit (opt-cmd-esc).

The strange thing is that I did not try to open that xxx project in the timeline. I was just trying to copy a range from a compound clip in the timeline into another compound clip already open in (another level of) timeline: just after selecting the range (R) FCP X decided to load project xxx and it got stuck.

Another weird thing is that while the Loading panel was visible and I had no control on FCPX, FCPX started to render the compound clip in the timeline. So I waited hoping that at its end (not the usual behavior... but ok) I could continue working. No way: rendering finishes, but the Loading panel is still there.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Piero

I'm not entirely sure from reading your post where the process is getting stuck. But just to get started, hold down the option key when you launch the app, That way, you can avoid automatically opening the library with the stuck project. You will then have the opportunity to create a new library with a single, empty event. Make a simple test project, importing a short clip and add a title. Test whether the app responds as it should.  If it does, there is probably something wrong with the stuck project or some media it's using.

    Thanks Russ for your answer.

I'll try what you suggest and I'll be back later on.

    Hi Russ I'm back.

One point I have to clarify: the project xxx in the "Loading xxx project" message does not seem to have any problem (BTW so far this happened to me only twice in a couple months, and probably - not sure - not on the same project).

When I load again FCPX after the forced quit, the project is there, it seems to have no problem, I can work on it as if nothing happened to it. I quit and re-loaded that project a number of times with no more issues.

BTW while waiting for FCPX "Loading xxx project" I checked the Activity Monitor: this showed NO CPU activity for FCPX. When I forced quit FCPX, in the opt-cmd-esc window FCPX was listed WITHOUT the "not responding" note, typical of stuck programs.

So probably this misbehavior did not affect that project. This is good news of course, but still I don't understand why FCPX got stuck.

A hidden problem in that project ? maybe, but whatever problem the project has, FCPX would better handle it more... kindly (possibly with a error message).

As usual my questions are: did anybody have this same problem ? is there any workaround/trick to "wake up" FCPX in these cases, and avoid a forced quit ?

Thanks a lot for your help

    Piero

PS: For further information xxx is a new project 1080i25 HD, based on imported HD camera clips and using a number of multicam, compound and synchronized clips, a couple stills, a couple audio clips, titles, simple transitions, etc.

    Not really.

It didn't happen to me any more, but in fact I haven't used FCPX very much in these months.

Interesting though that happened also to you...
