Q: iTunes doesn't recognise iphone5

my wife has just had a new phone issued to her by the apple store as her old one went defective. It was restored in the store but  now when i connect the phone to iTunes it doesn't pick up the iPhone and a message appears to say that its timed out and unable to connect.
