Q: What are the latest software updates available for PowerMac G5, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 5.1.4f0, PowerPC 970 (2.2)

There used to be a list of the latest software updates available by product somewhere in the Apple website.

Does anyone know where I could find it? If not here, where?

I've been reading about how the Apple software updater will not find or download the latest software versions available, so I would like to check manually what is out there to be updated. Thank you so much for your help and patience!

I do not know where you got your information, but software update does accurately select the software updates appropriate for your system. I have no clue where such a list (as you depict) would exist...or if there is one.

At some point, Apple announced they would no longer be issuing updates for older OSX versions. I have 10.6.8 on one computer and it has not had any updates since October 2013. Whatever is queued up in Software Update right now is probably all there is.

I'm sure you're up to date as far as any G5 can go, 10.5.8 is it, & last updates for 10.5.x were years ago.

Other than choosing to use TenFourFox browser, recent version, as your

default browser (select a new default from within Safari preferences) there

isn't much else out there to update or upgrade for vintage PowerPC Mac

when it already supports and is running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8.

    TenFourFox: http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

Backup of system and running software is recommended, and there are

a few good recent methods and devices available to do that. Then, look

into the aluminum Mac Pro models prior to the new black one. Of those

some previous models that can run Snow Leopard 10.6.8 may be able

to run some of your PPC applications, so long as Rosetta is installed, too.

You can still buy the retail DVD 10.6 from Apple for about $20. So be on

the lookout for a good clean earlier model Mac Pro aluminum tower...

Or go hunting for a Mac Pro which shipped with Snow Leopard 10.6.x

    Good luck & happy computing!

Thank you Barry, RIFerrarr, Allan, BDAqua and K Shaffer for your kind and informative answers to such bad and poorly made question. What I asked was not even close to what I had in mind. Please excuse me.

I wouldn't mention it again but now I feel compelled to explain what I really needed: Perhaps I am just dreaming but I remember seeing a long time ago a chart/table with the technical specifications (and I believe expansion/upgrade capabilities) including dates of different systems, including mine, in the main Apple website. Obviously that table/chart is not there anymore (obviously they only feature current models,) and I was hoping that someone had saved such tables/charts. I have found something similar (hardware only) in www.everymac.com but it is nothing like what I saw a long time ago.

Now, what I would also like to find, if it exists at all, is a table/chart with the latest updates available of Apple-developed-software (both factory installed and purchased separately) that can run natively by OS version (and in my case hardware as some of my systems are PPC.) I am sure I could still find the information if I dig app by app and page by page, but I have not found anything comprehensive. Finally, I would also like to find the same comprehensive information for security patches and firmware updates, again all in one place. That way I (or anyone) could simply go and verify manually and easily what is possible to run on my (her/his) different system(s) (I also have Intel based systems.)

I am very embarrassed about my question, but again, thank you all for your patience and for making a huge effort to answer it. Finally, thank you for teaching me new things, among other things that I can indeed trust Apple software update (if the log files are not corrupted, I assume,) and that there is a reliable option today for Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard (PPC)

    Cheers,

In addition to EveryMac website, there is MacTracker that gives you much info on Macs in a more concise form and in the form of an app for your Mac.

    http://www.mactracker.ca/

Also, may want to check the xlr8yourmac website, too!

This is also another one stop website everything Mac related, too!

    Some information from past articles can be found in the LowEndMac web site;

once there, enter ' PowerMac G5 ' into the search box to see some older stuff.

    http://lowendmac.com/

For some models of Apple computers, you may find more specifications and

other bits; way back when overclocking and other tweaks were fanfare for a

few hundred or thousand users, they also had reference to other sites of the

day. Of course, none of the ancient links would work; and products long gone.

    http://lowendmac.com/profiles.htm

{The consolidated effects of formerly new security updates and the like for

older non-current OS X and earlier Apple product support may still be on

    the Apple servers; could be a more troublesome dig to find them now, tho.}

There may be some OK reading in the LowEndMac site, still.

They had some user group stuff for awhile. Not sure, now.

    Good luck!
