Q: Unable to Install Windows 8 on secondary Hard Disk

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 17" i7 2,2 Ghz (early 2011 OSX 10.9.4) equipped with a 750 Gb Samsung SSD and a Secondary 750 Gb Toshiba HHD mounted in place of the Original Laptop's DVD optical Drive.

I've tried several times to Install Windows 8.0 into the Secondary HHD Drive (USB KEY created with a Windows 8.1 Iso Image through the Bootcamp assistent) but without success. This is the message at the end of the Windows 8.1 installation process:

"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed."

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I've tried Everything but now I Don't Know what else to do!!!

    Your disk1 should look something like this on the GPT and MBR side. Entry #4 on the MBR will be type '0C' rather than '07' as shown, since Windows has not yet been installed.

    sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    gpt show: /dev/disk0: mediasize=1000555581440; sectorsize=512; blocks=1954210120

    gpt show: /dev/disk0: Suspicious MBR at sector 0

    So...

    1) I've used Bootcamp assistant to create a single partition for Windows in HDD DISK (toshiba, disk 1).

    2) I waited boocamp download the drivers and let it create a new USB KEY.

    3) I've created a new directory called AppleODDInstaller64 under $WinPEDriver$ inside my 16gb usb key.

    4) I'Ve pasted the file AppleODDInstaller64.exe from the USB root Bootcamp/Drivers/Apple to the new directory.

    5) I did not edit the file AutoUnattend.xml file.

    During Reboot...  flash dash on a black screen!!! AGAIN!!!

    That's the new situation of HHD DISK:

    Disk: /dev/disk1    geometry: 91201/255/63 [1465149168 sectors]

    Signature: 0xAA55

    What Can I Try Now?

    The disk partition on the HDD is correct. You are giving it the whole disk - without the EFI.

    If you power cycle your Mac and use the Alt key to select the USB, does it bring up the Windows Installer?

    CD/DVD icon for Windows and CD/DVD icon for USB KEY (Drivers) labeled EFI Boot.

    My USB KEY is a Datatravel G4 16Gb.

    Is your USB Datatravel USB3.0 or USB2.0? A USB3.0 creates issues for Windows installation, especially on older Macs.

    Yes It's USB 3.0.  Can I Copy/Past all files into another USB 2.0?

    How much effort is it to disconnect the SATA cable from the SSD and try it again? On MacPro machines, Bootcamp is installed by removing all drives except the designated Bootcamp drive.

    Also if you do not use the Alt key, does the installation continue?

    I don't have the right screwdriver... I Will tray in the next days with a little help from a friend of mine.

    Let me understand, if I disconnect the SSD how can I select the Windows DVD on startup?

    Isn't the startup into the SSD where Mavericks is installed?

    If I Do not use the Alt Key the insallation continues until the dash on the black screen appears!

    Your OSX installation is on the SSD, and there is nothing needed from the SSD.

    You can select the DVD or USB when you power up and use the Alt Key. That is how you saw the a,b,c,d entries. Without the SSD, you will not see a and b, only c and d will be visible.

    The Bootmanager is on the ROM, and that is what needs to be used. For example, if your hard drive  does not work, Command+Opt+R starts Internet Recovery, so the Boot manager is what makes it work.

    Looking at the output of the strings command on the BCA binary, this is what I see as supported layouts. There are additional checks for 2TB disk, and SATA and PCI connections. This is from a 15" rMBP Late 2013. (Apple EFI/ESP, AB = Apple Boot, HFS=Standard OSX configuration, PV=Physical Volume - related to CoreStorage volumes, MSReserved - Microsoft System Reserved for EFI booting of Windows, MSDOS - to be converted to NTFS during installation, WinRE - Windows Recovery Environment)

    grep "CHECKING FOR LAYOUT" /tmp/BCA.txt

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 100=={EFI,HFS,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 101=={EFI,HFS,AB,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 102=={EFI,PV,AB,)<2t(,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 103=={EFI,PV,AB,)>2t(,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 104=={EFI,PV,AB,)=2t(,PV,AB,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 200=={EFI,HFS,MSDOS,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 201=={EFI,HFS,AB,MSDOS,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 202=={EFI,PV,AB,MSODS,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 203=={EFI,PV,AB,MSODS,PV,AB,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 204=={EFI,HFS,MSDOS, WinRE...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 205=={EFI,HFS,AB,MSDOS,WinRE,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 206=={EFI,PV,AB,MSODS,WinRE...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 207=={EFI,PV,AB,MSODS,PV,AB,WinRE,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 208=={EFI,HFS,MSReserved,MSDOS, ...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 209=={EFI,HFS,AB,MSReserved,MSDOS,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 210=={EFI,PV,AB,MSReserved,MSODS,...}

    CHECKING FOR LAYOUT 211=={EFI,PV,AB,MSReserved,MSODS,PV,AB,...}

    grep -e PCI -e SATA /tmp/BCA.txt

    SATA

    PCI-Express

    Disk %d is not SATA or PCI.

    Hi Loner T, I've finally solved The problem:

    01) Opened the Macbook pro

    02) Removed SSD from primary slot

    03) Removed HDD from secondary Slot (Where The Original superdrive was)

    04) Installed HDD on primary Slot

    05) Installed Superdrive in its original slot

    06) Installed Windows 7 with non-efi installation but through Bootcamp

    07) Everything worked great!

    08) Installed SSD in primary Slot

    09) Installed HDD on secondary Slot

    10) Removed Superdrive.

    Thank You For Your Help!

    Thanks for posting back. I suspected going back to the "original" hardware layout was the safest method. I assume that now with the Toshiba HDD in the secondary slot, you can use Windows and Startup Disk shows Bootcamp correctly.
