Q: Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

I upgraded to iTunes 11.4 today, and now I'm  not able to sync my iPhone 5s.  The sync button is greyed out.  I tried reinstalling, reauthorizing, signing in again in iTunes and my iPhone. I also restored my phone twice...not sure what else to do.  I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on an iMac Intel Core Duo.  Thanks in advance for your help.

For those with access to the 11.3.1 installer, you'll notice when running it (by selecting "Installer Log" from the Window menu and setting the Detail level to "All Logs") that a number of components are skipped "because the version [newer] is already installed."

In order for all of the 11.4 components to be replaced, you will need to remove, in addition to /Applications/iTunes.app,

    • /Library/Frameworks/iTunesLibrary.framework
    • /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/MobileDevices.bun dle
    • /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext
    • /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AirTrafficHost.framework
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreFP.framework
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework
    • /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

Having done that, and re-running the 11.3.1 installer, the buggy 11.4 version will have been removed and 11.3.1 restored.

Thanks for the information cwa2.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get into CoreTypes.bundle with pacifist version 3.0.10, which is the latest version that will run on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. So, I couldn't remove MobileDevices.bundle.

    Hi all,

Glad to know I'm not the only person with this problem.  I upgraded to the latest iTunes on my 2006 iMac (Intel) which has Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  My iPhone 4 (original, 2010) will connect but won't sync or back up.  It only shows 'other' as the content on the phone, doesn't differentiate between pictures, movies etc.

Really annoying, if I'd had any idea I wouldn't have upgraded.  Any solutions yet?  Is there a quick and easy way online to notify Apple?

Wow. Impressive work. Thank you. Your solution worked for me as well.

However, before manually removing the files you listed I tried running the 11.3.1 installer with the "-allow" switch thinking it will force install the older packages over the newer ones. I didn't get any error messages but I still couldn't sync my phone.

So I proceeded deleting the files you mentioned and ran the 11.3.1 installer. And this time, sync works!

    Thanks again!

    Use the "Go to" from finder (shift+ cmd+ G) : type /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/

    Hi there,

Any chance you can post easy-to-use instructions for those of us that aren't very tech-minded, please?  Also, does anyone know where I can get a download file for 11.3.1?

    Thanks.

    Hi again,

Turns out, your instructions were easier than I'd though.  I used the command + shift + G in Finder to find all of those files, removed them.  If anyone needs 11.3.1, you can download it from here:

I won't be upgrading my iTunes again anytime soon.  Thanks for your help, most appreciated.

I'm having the same issue. I'm not spending my Sunday night deleting files and reinstalling an old version of iTunes. Apple better fix this with an update and quickly...

You don't need Pacifist to view the contents of CoreTypes.bundle; in the Finder, just CTRL-click the bundle icon and select "Show Package Contents" to get to the file you need to delete.

Much thanks to cwa2 for the fix!

I noticed a bunch of you early on upthread posted that you have older machines.

I think I know why things broke for you guys:

    /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/My Mac Pro/2014-09-09-000548/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleUSBE thernetHost: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures: [i386: Mach-O i386 object] [x86_64: Mach-O 64-bit x86_64 kext bundle]

    /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/My Mac Pro/2014-09-10-002510/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleUSBE thernetHost: Mach-O 64-bit x86_64 kext bundle

The previous line is from when I still had iTunes 11.3.1 installed.  The following line is from my first backup after installing iTunes 11.4.

Unless Apple's iTunes 11.4 installer is really smart and can cherry-pick which version of the binary inside the kext to install, it looks like Apple goofed and the installer only comes with a 64-bit version of the kext.  Oops!
