Q: How do I remove the free U2 album from my iTunes library?

So we all have a free U2 album in our iTunes library now. I don't like U2 and don't want it. I get an option to 'hide' it in iTunes, but not to delete it. How can I remove it entirely from my library in iCloud? I have just been to iCloud.com, but can't see anything there.

    Hi all,

I'm the OP. Could we please try to keep things civil rather than trolling each other? Responding to other comments, my feeling is that calls for a class-action lawsuit are a bit over the top. Yes, I don't like the addition of unrequested content to our accounts without an option to opt out or to delete it. It's one of the reasons I started this thread. But as others have mentioned this is a volunteer community, and I think the best way to get Apple to change things is to contact them and give feedback directly, since the problem is out of the capabilities of anyone here to solve; this link is one means to give feedback (that I was directed to by an Apple Support rep when asking how to best do so): http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

To others with this problem, the status is:

    1. The album can be 'hidden' from our playlists using steps as shown by turingtest2 and others in this thread.

    2. However, you cannot fully delete it from your account (it always remains 'in the cloud').

    3. Apple Support either cannot or will not fully delete it from your account (based on email and phone conversations I and others have had).

So the summary is that the album cannot be fully deleted from your account (only 'hidden' - not the same as full deletion - from playlists and devices).

I'm not calling for a class, just noting that many are.

And amazed at the vitriol that an offer of a free gift attracts from a small but vocal group. (One comparison to Nazism was particularly laughable)

To me it just looks like bad manners over nothing.

Your comments are well made, and it would be nice if people could behave with courtesy. But I still maintain that CSound1 misses the point whilst he continues to labouriously berate Grandmstrbud. The point is quite simple:- To my mind Apple have betrayed an implicit trust that they accept when they inform you that "your details will not be used/shared/compromised" etc etc in particular for Commercial Gain. Yet Apple invade my privacy by downloading into the "cloud" they kindly give me to use (I hope that mollifies you CSound1) having assured me of the privacy, safety and security of that data space they are loaning / renting / giving (please tick the correct one Csound1) to me whilst I remaiin a customer of Apple..

This is particularly worrying at the present time when there have been allegations that the of the pictures leaked onto the web from (it is alleged) the Apple Cloud may (it is alleged) have been leaked by an alleged apple employee.

It is simply CSound1, the removal of free choice that I think many of the "objectors" take exception to.

Now let's all play nice shall we?

    Regards

    weeshus

Explain how the provision of a link from where you can choose to download a free gift violates your privacy, security or safety?

What has been breached, certainly not the iTunes library terms of use (the ones you previously agreed to) so what exactly was?

Any download has to be initiated by you, either by automatic download if you have chosen that method, manual download or by playing the song.

After much aggravation I finally figured out how to solve this, and someone already posted the answer but here it is again for anyone who just skips to the end for the answer instead of reading all of the arguing in the entire thread:

If there is music that you have purchased (or been gifted or whatever ) in your iTunes account that you want to disappear:

Step 1) on your computer, go into iTunes. Click on the "purchased" tab

Step 2) find the unwanted music (in this case: the pesky 'free' U2 album)

Step 3) click the X in the corner of the album art, that should inform you that you will be 'hiding" that music.

NOW  - very important- anyone using the "show all music" feature on your iPhone so that you can stream your purchases with out having them take up hard drive space on your phone... you will notice that the U2 album is STILL there with the little cloud symbol next to it. and no, you cannot just swipe and delete it.

STEP 4) on your iPhone, close out of the music app.

Step 5)  on your iPhone, go into settings and SIGN OUT / LOG OUT of your iTunes account.

Step 6) now log back into your iTunes account.

Should be gone. This worked for me. I got rid of U2 and a few other unwanted things... now I can shuffle and stream all of my purchased iTunes music without U2 being there.

I DID NOT HAVE TO RESET MY ENTIRE PHONE TO FACTORY SETTINGS

I DID NOT HAVE TO RESTORE FROM BACK UP

    !!

Once I figured out what to do, it took about 3 minutes to get rid of U2.

    Hope that helps !!!

You missed one critical distinction in your first step. They need to click on Purchased under the Quick Links in the iTunes Store. Many people get the Purchased option listed under the "Store" section in the left-hand sidebar confused with the Purchased option under the Quick Links section in the right-hand sidebar.

It is confusing, and understandably so. So, it is extremely important that when you are providing instructions concerning Purchased, that you are very specific as to which "Purchased" you are referring to....

    Cheers,

Where are you attempting to delete the songs from? Are you in the iTunes App or the Music App? Did you turn off "Music" under the Show All section in Settings>iTunes & App Store?

Thanks - worked. I synched my phone before and it did not accomplish anything. Thanks for being specific. That "gift" took about 3 hours of my time to remove all traces. I didn't want U2 to play when I am playing my songs on shuffle. I hope Apple never tries this again.

Some people seem to be missig the point.

This seems to be the thin end of a very large wedge. If Apple continue to kindly provide us with free albums I will end up with more free albums that I dont want in my list, than albums that I do want. This will make not improve my life or my temper in any way.

Go and hide it you say, why should I have to, I didn't ask for it, why should I have to take time out of my life to deal with something that has been forced on me.

I have utilised the feedback form to make my feeling known.

Dunno what the big de is. You appear to be a U2 fan. Anyway, you haven't downloaded them yet. Read back in this thread for instructions on hiding the purchase. It has been given many many times on these forums.

I am a U2 fan. I do not want this album though! I have deleted it and reinstalled it many many times. My brain is breaking here. I need some sleep far out.

Yes it is the end of the world. Forget wars and terrorism. This is mans greatest problem at present. Maybe if you follow the instructions given many times here then life will return to normal and you can sleep.
