Q: Cannot update apps in Mac App Store. Error message: "There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (20)"

This has been a problem for weeks I have done the following with no success:

1) Made sure I am using the same apple ID that was used to purchase apps.

2) Signed out and back into the app store

3) Quit and relaunched App Store

4) Restarted computer

5) Made sure the App Store is set to America.

6) Updated payment information, including my billing address

7) Reset all warnings and messages

Nothing is working! I am also having issues in FCPX and Compressor which I think would be remedied if I could update to the latest versions. Please help.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

    From the menu bar, select

               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Language & Region

Deselect each unwanted language from the list and click OK. Then select your region from the Region menu.

Close the preference pane. You may have to log out and log back in for the change to take effect.

If there's no change, reset the PRAM.

I had no unwanted to languages to deselect, only English was shown in the list. I reset the PRAM but that didn't work either. I am still getting the same error messages when attempting to update my apps

Sidenote: I can download and install new apps no problem.

So I solved it. It was an Apple ID issue. I am assuming at this point that Error 20 means there is a general account issue (i.e.. payment problem, region issue, apple id issue, etc). The machine I use was originally set up with a coworker's Apple ID. The apps I was trying to install had been installed under HER Apple ID. The app store would not let me update using mine. I did not realize this because I thought I had updated FCP many times before with no issue.

    Solution:

    Uninstalled apps causing problem.

Reinstalled under MY correct Apple ID

They are now up to date.

I solved the problem by simply finding a free app.

It then asks me to accept some new license text. After that all my downloads work again.
