Q: why does mac mail keeps going offline

I think we all know mac mail keeps going offline and stays offline until you restart the application. This IS ever since Mountain Lion. I am running an iMac and I am sure Apple knows of this. They ought to be ashamed of themselves to sit on this issue and expect everyone to just keep restarting their apps. Apple aren't you better than this? You have $B fix the problem!!!!!

I'm having this same issue and looking through the other forums it seems to be a problem for many. Hope we get some help on this soon.

On our 2 computers, Mail doesn't go offline - maybe we are lucky.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner. You can use the link below or the feedback link in Mail.

Hi, I have same issue - just got a new Imac 27 and mail goes offline every time...

BUT there is a solution of sorts, as I found in another post... rather than re-start the mail app - which can't be good every time, control click on your mail inbox  (or any of them if you have more than one) - then go 'get account info' at bottom of menu - this sends communication to the server and should get mail online again (assuming all other things working ie internet connection, wi fi etc).

Better than quitting/restarting an app, if it works for you - I hope so (it did for me).

Doesn't fix the bug, but is a workaround.

This seems to have recently got a lot worse for me, i used to get only some folders timing out now and again, but now most or all accounts are going completely offline every hour or two.

Neither taking all (or individual) accounts online, nor synchronising nor the "get info" thing doesn't seem to work for me here now, sadly...

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and Mail drops offline every time the computer goes to sleep.  The only way to fix it is to reopen the app.  Add to this that Mail also randomly 'forgets' my passwords and I have to re-enter them constantly and you've got a pretty shoddy programme.

What about other mail programmes that work well with Mac?  Any suggestions?  Feels like time for a change if Apple can't sort themselves out.  Great computers - too bad the programme itself is so buggy.

My Mail icon was there, could quit and open via Finder - still nothing to see.

I went to the top Mail menu - towards the right - Window - and clicked on 'Message Viewer' and voila!

    My Mail is back.

It's great that you guys are resourceful (patient) enough to use these workarounds.  I have been using the same tactics to get the mail back online, but this once occassional problem is now happening several times per day.  It's very irritating and none of us should have to employ any kind of restart/reconnect trick to deal with this issue - this happens approx. everytime I navigate away from the active Mail window (computer doesn't even need to go to sleep).  I certainly hope that Apple won't fix this because they want to force us to upgrade to Mavericks or whatever the new pointless OS coming out is called.  I was happy with Snow Leopard -- I could still run my thousands of dollars of software from my G5 without having to spend more money that I can't afford in this amazing economic recovery which seems to only benefit big corporations and kill us small business owners.  Anyways, what's the story Apple?  Where's the patch?  Where's the tech support in this thread?  Perhaps Apple's tech suport is going the way of the thickness of it's harware

I had a 7 year old mac and when I updated to Mountain Lion it started doing this, I thought it was cause my computer is old. But now I have a brand new Macbook Pro and it's doing it agian!?!?!?! ***

This is what I have noticed, when I have imessage open and calendar open this seems to happen, when I close them it and restart the app it seems to go away. It doensn't go away if I have them open and restart.

    MS Word is another culprit.

On My old comp I would have to close out most of the apps except safari and one more

So I think it's got something to do with how much RAM is going, whatever it is you should probably get on it, us business users need emails!

I only recently started having the Mail App freeze constantly. I remembered that I had recently turned on Back to My Mac in the iCloud. I disconnected it and the app seems to be working normally now. To disconnect the feature, or to check whether you have it on, click on Mail, Accounts, iCloud and deselect the Back to my Mac box, if it is checked.

Apologies. Turning off Back to My Mac in iCloud didn't do the trick. Mail still freezes, though it's less frequent.

It doesn't happen with me while I am using Mail, but happen after about an hour lazy, without any command. But in this case I just close the Mail window and open it again... It starts automatically and updated and I do not need to write password or any additional information.

I was told to make my mail password the same as my Apple ID password. Don't know why, but it seems to work. I don't keep getting asked for my password like I used to. Hope that helps. Don't have an answer for your other problem.

Thanks so much for this David...it worked for me; never had a problem before and just figured my server was having a bad day (I live in India!) but it's set it to rights again...
