Q: Repeated "AirTrafficHost" errors in console after 11.4 update; CPU spikes

After updating to iTunes 11.4 a couple days ago I noticed my CPU was getting pegged hard.  I looked at Activity Monitor and saw CrashReporter processes spawning and respawning.  When I looked at Console.app I found hundreds of crash logs for "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AirTrafficHost.framework/ath."

Restoring the previous version of iTunes and /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks in its entirety fixed things.  Today I tried reinstalling 11.4 since I plan on installing iOS 8 on my devices next week and I will need iTunes compatibility.  The same thing occurred, however I was able to remedy it by restoring the following directories from Time Machine Backups:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AirTrafficHost.framework

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

I just synced my iPad and iPhone successfully and no particularly strange errors are appearing in the console logs.  I'm running 10.6.8 on a 32-bit Mac (first generation black MacBook) and I suspect this is somehow related.

MacBook (13-inch), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I am having a very similar problem on my old iMac CD running 10.6.8  After updating to iTunes 10.4 it repeatedly gives ATH Quit Unexpectedly ignore/send to apple dialogues. It looks very much like a bug when syncing to iDevices over wifi. Not the first chronic iTunes bug linked to 32 bit OSX But probably the most irritating to date. ITunes now completely unusable for me. Apple shambles again. ITS A BUG APPLE, FIX IT!

Same problem here, same OS version, same hardware (except is 2GHz, 1GB of ram and white)

I think maybe a crash log might help

Yes got exactly the same crash logs. I re-installed iTunes 11.3 but the problem persists. Presumably the buggy framework was not reverted. As I don't run Time Machine on this machine I'm going to have to try reinstalling from the 10.6 disc - if I can find it :-) I'll post the outcome on here.

If you're willing to trust that I'm not a horrible lunatic, these are the three frameworks zipped up for you:

Mind you, I'm using these in conjunction with 11.4.

Thanks, working perfectly for me now in conjunction with iTunes11.3.1 which I downloaded from softonic.com. You saved me a lot of hassle, much appreciated!

I did like you said and now it looks like it's working fine.

I guess when Apple will update iTunes we should do that procedure again if they don't solve it (and I fear they won't: Intel 32-bit hardware is obsolete for Apple as far as I know)

    Hey all,

I am having this problem on my old CoreSoloMini (23bit) since updating iTunes last week. Only I am getting an error alert saying "ath quit unexpectedly" when I connect my iPhone 3GS and launch iTunes 11.4. The alert will go away for a few seconds when I hit "Okay", but returns after a couple of seconds. Total drag.

I grabbed the zip file, but I don't know how to change a system framework. Of course the Finder does not like me dragging the old framework out of the PrivateFrameworks directory. I assume I use the Terminal, but what is the process? I have tried searching for how to do this, but am nervous that I will screw things up worse if I do it wrong.

Provided that you are logged in as a user with Admin privileges you should be able to just drag and drop using the Finder. You will be asked to enter your user & password & then it will do the copies. You could use the terminal to do the delete and copies but you will still be asked for a your password.

Okay, so I updated to iOS 8 on my iPad and iPhone yesterday and as I somewhat anticipated, there are syncing errors.  Whenever I try to sync either device over wireless with 11.4 using the hack I discussed above I get an error saying something along the lines of, "iTunes cannot sync iPad/iPhone because it cannot determine which apps to sync."  If you go to the "apps" tab the homescreen icons never fully populate and the area where you can transfer files between apps never appears.  The device settings sync, but not the physical apps.

Everything is fine if syncing is done over USB, though.  Anyone else having a similar experience?

I managed this (had to delete MobileDevice.framework before copying in your version, but was able to replace the other two).  Now I can back up my iPhone 5c with iOS 8 to my Macbook 10.6.8 with iTunes 11.4.   (and have done so now).

I wish I had found this out last night:  I downloaded iOS 8 through iTunes  (took over two hours) and then I couldn't upgrade my iPhone.  SO, I upgraded the iPhone directly (another 2-3 hours).

    Anyway, thank you SO much.

I'm not having that problems, but, as you say, it works with USB which is what I'm using.

Can you try syncing over wireless to see if you get the same error?

Believe it or not, a guy in this thread reports that Apple updated iTunes to fix this issue and did not even mention it to anyone.

Upgraded to iTunes 11.4 and now it won't sync my iPhone 5s-sync button is greyed out.

Pretty lame.  Syncing over wireless is working perfectly now.
