Q: error 40 on iPhone

My iPhone stopped working. Screen comes up with request to connect to iTunes. Followed on screen instructions on pc computer. On connecting it goes to restore my iPhone and after it goes through this process all that happens is a message saying Error 40. Any suggestions as to what to do next?
