Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

Helgason's TheLostFinderNewWindow plugin is a gift from heaven as it restores the fundamentally important double-click-opens-folder-in-a-new-separate-window. It rescued the operability of my archives built up over many years. I never ever imagined a basic UI-operation like this would possibly be changed. Before Mavericks came...

Now I wonder if this is going to continue. Things changing for the worse, the need would emerge for many new plugins. My worried question is: Could plugins like this one compromise security or privacy of the system?

@Helgason & @Axtmorder: Me too also — a simple plugin but absolutely invaluable I also had some difficulty in making OSX 10.9.3 to accept the plugin, but I found that if I went through the install instructions and immediately shut down and restarted, it actually worked seamlessly. And so far, continues to do so.

Unfortunately, it seems, that this plug-in does not work on the Yosemite beta.

But maybe it's not the plug-in itself, but rather SIMBL not starting up under Yosemite. As easySIMBL you'll not leave the "Use SIMBL" checkbox checked.

Does that mean that Apple has completely ignored all the feedback and that Yosemite is just as poor from a useability perspective as Mavericks? I'm sick of all these bells and whistles they are throwing our way. I just want my basic functionality back. Ah well, better send another feedback report for Apple to disregard.

Guess we will know that when it's released. Or just guess if you want an answer before it is released.

    How much feedback was there?

Oh excuse me - false alarm.

After I rebooted my Yosemite DP1,

SIMBL seams to be loaded now. Finder is ok now again with "TheLostFinderNewWindow".

    Thumbs up!

I'd just like to express my deep, deep gratitude to the author of this. It may seem a bit petty, but this ridiculous finder change has really been taking the shine off getting a new Mac - twenty years of habit are hard to break! FWIW, given Apple my 2p worth over the change, more than once - what was the point???

Again many, many thanks to the author for restoring normality.

No, I am only able to get another tab.  Also, in general preferences, I have deselected 'open folders in tabs instead of windows' but it NEVER does--ALWAYS opens in tabs.  I have to manually go up to select 'new finder window' in order to get 2 finder windows open, then click on the third one that I wanted open in the first place.  It is a constant battle with an invisible enemy.  Another nail in the coffin for Mavericks.

    Howdy,

I wish I could make no toolbar the default behavior.

Also, the Finder's Keyboard Shortcuts work differently than using the mouse and clicking! If I have a folder selected (and I've set that folder to NOT have a Toolbar!) Opt-Double Click will properly open that folder (without the Toolbar) and close the enclosing folder while Opt-Cmd-O opens the folder WITH A TOOLBAR! In the past they behaved the same.

    Good Luck,

Double click the folder while holding down the command key. This will open the clicked folder in a new window, leaving the original window open. I think this is the answer to the original question.

I know it's a long topic, but you couldn't have read it to give this same answer (which has been posted at least three other times), which is not what the OP and many others in this topic are looking for. Until Mavericks, you've never had to hold any modifier key down to open a folder in its own window. All it took to do that was a check box in the System Preferences. That is now gone, and there's no way in Mavericks to make it behave as every version of OS X before it.

    Howdy,

Supposedly you can get the old behavior (Cmd-O or Double-Click opens the selected folder in a New Window while keeping the old window open and Opt-Cmd-O or Opt-Cmd-Double-Click opens the selected folder in a New Window and closes the old window) by removing the toolbar. But my experience is that (Opt)-Cmd-Double-Click behaves correctly while while (Opt)-Cmd-O tends to open the new window with a toolbar present even though the folder was set up with the toolbar turned off.

    Good Luck,

    Herb Schulz
