Q: itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

Okay, this problem get's very nasty... I received my new iPhone toady and wanted to restore the Backup of my old phone.

Everything works fine until it comes to the "sync Apps" phase - once it tries to copy the first app to the device it crashes.

On my iPhone only empty stubs of the apps show up all saying "Waiting..."

THERE IS NO WAY TO RESTORE A BACKUP TO A BRANDNEW IPHONE6 IN THIS SITUATION.

Hopefully Apple fixes this soon otherwise it might cause serious trouble!

I have the same problem with Windows 8.1, iTunes 11.4 and iPhone5.

Before reading this discussion I spoke with Apple telephone support two times (yesterday and before) about this problem.

They don't known anything about this and make me several attempts such reinstall, login with another account.

Today at 07:00 PM they will call me another time and I will tell them that don't have solutions.

    Best regards.

    PS: sorry for my english

    Hello,

I have the same problem !

    Windows 7, 64bit

iTunes crashes immediately when starting to copy the the apps !

    Very sad

I also got the 'Waiting' apps on my iPhone 5s.

Besides that, I lost my complete app arangements ( the app folders ), another 30 wasted minutes...

    I JUST DOESN'T WORK.

I can't understand why Apple seems to be unable to make this KEY application for device access and management ROCK SOLID.

If you stored your iTunes Library on a NAS - there is a workaround to this problem. Just move your library to an internal harddisk - the syncing of apps will work again.

yep, read that before that moving the data back to a computer will "fix" this ... only: before 11.4, it did not need a fix, therefore, Apple better hurries with an update that takes care of this bug!

True - but for the People getting their iPhone 6 tomorrow and trying to restore their backup to the new device - this workaround will be the only way to restoe the backup from a NAS library. After that the library can be moved back to the NAS and the next workaround will be to install/update apps on the iDevice - not in iTunes. Let's hope that Apple acknowledges that problem and provides a fix fast.

Like I stated before, since I have multiple pc's, one for media, I will not and can not move everything to my laptop just to fix n Apple screw up. This IS NOT a solution, it is a temp fix for a problem they created. We need to START CALLING, enough complaints and they will have to fix it,, we should not have to find work around. ******** here does nothing, start calling, I am.

    Of course!

Apple Tech Support will call me at your 10:00 AM (07:00 PM in Italy).

They must read this thread so I can say I'm not alone.

For cymermagic: for me isn't a good idea to move the library to c:

Apple MUST give us the fix!

I too have the problem. I agree that it looks like an iTunes 11.4 bug. I am running on Win7-64.

Any attempt to sync apps fails. If there is no need to load an app, then things are ok.

As you can imagine, this is a problem after moving to iOS8 and trying to recover a backup...

OR, receiving a new iPhone6 and recovering a backup, which will be happening a lot very soon now...

Apple need to fix this quickly!

    All

I have sort of worked through the problem with blunt force. Clearly there are problems with itunes 11.4 and new cloud services. My feeling is it has something to do with the way apple changed how apps are authorized or tracked behind the scenes down to the device level and specifically how this hits the PC level itunes app. Once you upgrade to iOS8 its clear apple added a new family sharing feature for apps and music (allows association of multiple itunes accounts under a  main family account). I think certain pools of apps get caught up in this problem. Couple of related points before i get to solution

-My kids school uses ipads and do this via the family itunes account (pre iOS8). The school then behind the scenes pushes out batches of apps intended for only the child's ipad. Problem is this is affecting all the "i" devices associated with the ituens account.  What happened since v11.4 of itunes released is i started to sync / backup all my devices and noticed the itunes crashing. There would be some place holder apps that were in a perpetual pending status.

-Separate issue it seems there are a couple of the apple apps like iMovie, Find my phone, Friends, etc that install via direct device updates (not through itunes sync) but then when finally get sync to work without crashing give error message that the app is only supported in iOS8. Not sure why apple allows this to install on iOS7...

Solution: On each device directly install all these apps via wifi first then sync. Sync may crash as it identifies yet another pool of apps that must be installed. This was an iterative process for me. Eventually once all the apps are installed then the sync will finally run.

upgrade to iOS8 .. this solves the problem with the apps that only support iOS8.

24 hours of **** but now all my devices on iOS8 and will run a clean sync without crashing itunes.

With this said I am not sure what is going to happen when there is a new app released by my kids school or on other app updates roll in.

Also before i did the blunt force method above i tried all sorts of troubleshooting including repairing and reinstalling itunes. Each time i ended up with itunes crashing during sync when it shows its trying to update / copy apps to the device.

    PC: windows 7 pro 64, itunes 11.4

    Best of luck.
