Q: Can't edit photos in iOs 8

I just upgraded my iPhone 5 to iOs 8 last night, and aside from the dismay at the disappearance of the Camera Roll, so I don't know what's on my phone, I also find that none of my photos are editable, except the last two I took yesterday, before I upgraded.  What's the problem?

I don't have the iCloud Drive activated, or Family Sharing.  iCloud Photo Sharing is on, and My Photo Stream, but that was true before. Any suggestions?

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.4

if your photos are not editable, they have probably not been imported to your device, but are in My Photo Stream. To be able to edited them add them to an album:  Select the photo, the tap "Add to".

I guess this raises the larger question; before, Camera Roll photos, as I understand it, were ON my phone, including some of the ones in my current "Recent" section .  Now, you're saying they're not on the phone.  What pictures ARE on my phone now, and how do I tell?  i suppose I can turn on Airplane Mode and see what's left...

Air Plane mode is a good test, to show what is on iCloud drive, but thePhoto Stream is actually stored locally, so you will see it even in Air Plane mode.

An easy test see if photo is in your Camera Roll is to try to tag it as favourite. If that works, it has been imported to your library.

    Have you migrated from iPhoto?

Not sure what you mean by "migrated".  I synced/backed up my phone prior to updating to iOS 8, and did so again after, but all my other settings/practices have been the same.  My photos are still in iPhoto on my laptop, which is running Mavericks.  I'm not using the iCloud drive for that reason, until Yosemite comes along.

Thank you, by the way, for explaining the PhotoStream structure - I've never been completely clear on what's on and off the phone, photo wise.

But I guess I'm still not clear on why I can't edit photos from before yesterday, that do appear to be on my phone.

Not sure what you mean by "migrated".

I meant - have you previously used iPhoto iOS on your iPhone?  Photos you previously had in in iPhoto on your iPhone and not on your Mac would have had to be migrated (Migrating from iPhoto for iOS to Photos on iOS 8).

But I guess I'm still not clear on why I can't edit photos from before yesterday, that do appear to be on my phone.

Try to save photos you cannot edit to an album. That should ensure that you have a local copy.

Here's the kicker.  If I go into one of my Albums (that I created in iOs 7 months ago), I can't edit THOSE photos, either.

Just found this article:  Migrating from iPhoto for iOS to Photos on iOS 8 .  I'm not sure what iPhoto for iOS is, unless that's what's labeled "Photos" on my iPhone, both in iOS 7 and now in 8.  I didn't see any Migrate dialog on my phone after updating.  Obviously, in terms of going from iPhoto on my Mac, I'll have to wait until Yosemite.  Not sure if this is what's causing the difficulty, but thought I'd mention it.

I have several thousand photos (12 GB) synced to my iPad from my MacBook iPhoto events, and I can no longer edit any of them without creating a copy. I receive the message: "this photo is not editable", and am prompted to make a copy if I want to continue and edit.

I previously (in iOS 6 or 7) tried the iOS iPhoto App and wasn't a huge fan and removed it, so upon updating to iOS 8 I had no option to merge photos. I did re-download it from the App Store today, and iPhoto told me my data had already been merged.

Not sure what's going on :/

I MOVED PHOTOS THAT WERE UNEDITABLE INTO AN Album. I edited them. And now the photos appear to be full of white snowflakes, pixelated may be the right word.  Why? What do i do?

Hi I just got a new Iphone 6Plus so I copied and paste loads of photos from my mac to the iphone using a app called Tongbu which allows you to edit files on the iphone without itunes. After the photos have been placed I found out that none of them are deletable or editable so i tried to delete them using the same app but all it does is it says that the photo has been deleted but when i refresh the program, the photos come back.

Please Reply ASAP since I have thousands of uneditable photos on my brand new phone,

    Thanks In Advance.

    hello to all.

to edit photos without duplicate and copy - you need select photos from camera roll then select edit.

or you need go to into photos app, on the bottom it shows categories PHOTOS - SHARED - ALBUM, you will need to select photos then find photo to edit and job done

Does the "Add To" has to be done to each photo? If so, that would be silly, I have hundreds of pics that I want to edit that are not editable.
