Sep 17, 2014 12:04 PM in response to nicola6by greg sahli,★HelpfulGenerally, we don't recommend any speedup or cleanup apps. Some are semifunctional, but all are dangerous and can lead to reinstalling 10.9
But there are built-in things to try.
Try a Safe Boot - it checks out the hard drive as well as clearing some system files that might be corrupted because they are the most frequent ones written to:
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Use it for a while to see if you can tell if there's a change, then restart normally to see if the problem comes back.
There are a couple more free things to do, too, so come back if you need to.
Oh, thanks baltwo - you're a faster typist, I see

have resolved the problem, as ever to a untechy person like me, there are always conflicting views - spoke to apple help earlier who advised that i should not have ran the safe boot ? anyhow its all sorted now and had a lot to do with some of the key chain setting not being recognised after the downloading of mavericks, thanks

Well, that's interesting - since Apple are the ones who came up with it - and suggested what it's for.
