Hi,
If you had setup iCloud, there would not be any inconvenience. You would have been able to create a backup especially since you're not using iTunes. Backing up your iPhone data is your repsonsibility, not Apple's.

If you can access a Wi-Fi network, you can setup iCloud > Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices.
You get 5GB's of storage for free > iCloud storage upgrade pricing
That way you would be able to create a backup.
