Q: Software Upgrades

I need to upgrade software.

I curently have an iMac running OSX 10.6.8.  I am using Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac with Windows XP Professional SP 3 to run Quicken Home and Business 2011.  Quicken is the only thing I run on the virtual machine (other than the windows and parallels of course)

Since the Quicken and XP software are no longer supported I need to upgrade.

I will go with Quicken Home & Business 2014 (when will Intuit make Home & Business for Mac and relieve my suffering?).

It looks like Windows 7 Professional is my best bet for OS.  (Our kids have Windows 8.1 and I'm not impressed).

Questions:

I'm hoping that there won't be any issues/conflicts with the Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac?

I have no idea if I should use a 32 or 64 bit version of Windows 7?

I also need to replace my CD drive on iMac (so I can load the software)  I am guessing the best thing to do for that is go to the Apple Store and have them install one?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Upgrading to Mavericks

You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

    Upgrading to Mavericks

To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks

             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

         Are my applications compatible?

See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

    Upgrading to Lion

If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.

You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

         Lion System Requirements

           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,

               or Xeon processor

           2. 2GB of memory

           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)

           4. 7GB of available space

           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

You need to upgrade Parallels to Version 9 or 10. You will need to use Win7 or 8 64-bit in Parallels.

Quicken 2015 is available in the App Store if you want to look at it.

Is not going to work with Mavericks. You would need, at a minimum, Parallels Desktop 8.

I did not plan on upgrading the Mac OS. Especially if it will require I then upgrade the parallels

i am I reluctant upgrader. If it is working I do not see any reason to mess it up.  I must upgrade Quicken and windows.

thank you for your response and the info on the 32vs64 bit

I'm not running Mavericks. And prefer to upgrade only what I absolutely need to.  At this point that is the Quicken and Windows.

    Thanks for your help.

An external CD/DVD player would be cheaper if you have the space.

Do you have any suggestions for external R/W drives?  Have been shopping but not finding too many good reviews for the drives on the market.

    Thanks

You are welcome. My Superdrive is still working, so I haven't looked for a drive. Perhaps someone else can help.

I bought an "LG Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer" recently at Best Buy.  I think about $45.  Works very well; compatible with Mac and Windoz.  They have a couple others that are a little more "robust".  I'd go with the more robust ones for everyday use.  HTH.

I can only find Yosemite at the App Store.
