Q: How do i use Peer-to-peer AirPlay discovery and playback?

I saw on the Apple iOS enterprise site that I can use AirPlay without connecting to a wireless network, dose this happen via Bluetooth? i cannot discover my iPhone iOS 8 on the AppleTV iOS 8.

From enterprise site;

Peer-to-peer AirPlay discovery and playback.

With iOS 8, you can wirelessly connect iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to Apple TV without first connecting to the organization’s network. Which means you can present or share your work even if you're offline or the organization has a complex network.

AppleTV 2, iOS 8, Bluetooth integrated model

Problem solved.  I have a third generation Apple TV - not Rev A.   The model number, A1427 in printed on the bottom of the Apple TV.  The model number of the Rev A is A1469.  I'm out of luck, sadly.

The reboot worked, as I couldn't select "Airplay" after the software update. I thought it had to do something with the firmware on my AV receiver, but that didn't change things. After the reboot, everything worked. Thanks!

I had the same issue but it seems the airplay option has moved out of the app and into the OS. It is available for any (?) app through the control center now.

From what I can tell, this is essentially vapor-ware. I can get it to work intermittently. Any downloaded iTune movie will not play, apparently god-forbid, we play a movie that we legitimately "bought" and Apple does not trust us to play it on our Apple device unless they can see it playing. I am about over all of this stuff. It does not work as advertised.

Of course 2 minutes after posting this, it started working. I have bluetooth turned off on the Apple TV now. The wifi is on but not locked into a network. I do not even have the wifi on, but not connected to any internet connection. I am not sure if there is some handshake or what that needs to happen.

Well, it might have been nice if Apple had actually checked to make sure it worked. This is two hours I will not get back in life. Earlier today I called AppleCare and they did not even know what I was talking about. Nice huh?

After another hour I found that you have to enable the airplay feature on the apple tv, then activate the wifi then bluetooth on the ipad. I got an unknown error 3 when trying to play a movie from the iTunes store. I guess they crippled playing the movie unless you are in contact with the iTunes store. This was a waste of time and effort. Very disappointing. Why have mobile features if you cannot be mobile?

Thanks Chris, I must have a non Rev A ATV. I cant read the bottom the micro printing is outrageously small so that must be it. What the difference is between them I don't know.

Steve, you could try doing what I did. I zoomed in using my iPhone camera and took a picture. Pretty expensive magnifying glass but it worked. There is nothing in the menus that would indicate which version of ATV one might have. The use of the ATV without a network would be a great idea if they would have either tested it to make sure it worked, or they would have told us the magic formula on how to make it work. Until they do that, you likely are not missing anything. Good luck.

Okay I have model A1469 which is REV. A, still no luck. From what I understand Bluetooth and WiFi must be on at the same time even if it is not connected to the wifi system available. I will try that and report back!

step one. turn on Bluetooth for AppleTV

step two. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your iOS device

step three. restart your Apple TV.

step four. Pull up your control panel on your iOS device and select AppleTV mirroring

step five. Please let me know if this works for you. It took me about an hour of tinkering

to figure out I had to just restart the AppleTV.
