Q: Changing wireless printing when changing routers???

OK, not sure if I need to do this so asking to be sure. Right now I am connected wirelessly thru my Verizon router, and then Apple Airport Extreme, but think that is slowing down my internet connection but not sure if it really matters. I can switch to just the wireless router thru Verizon without going thru Airport (seems redundant to be using 2 routers) and connect on my laptop. But when I change to just the Verizon router I can no longer print wirelessly to my Canon Pixma 560 printer. Can anyone give me instructions on exactly how to change the printing options? I read that you select the Print & Fax option in systems but no Print & Fax in Maverick but is Printing and Sharing, but don't see anything there to select. Also, can someone advise me steps to connect wirelessly through a 2nd computer on Mavericks (iMac desktop)? I am not tech davy so need step-by-step instructions and easy terminology or I will be lost, but love my Apple products. Opinions on switching to the only-Verizon router option??? If I DO NOT switch and keep it with airport, instructions on setting up the iMac to wirelessly print also, or if changing to Verizon router same options with that router??? I love the help people are willing to share on these posts and appreciate any help I can get.

    1. If you have login to your 9100EM VZ router, in Safari browser type http://192.168.1.1. (See Page 16 of the 9100EM link I provided). The credentials for the login should have been provided by VZ when the 9100EM was installed.

    2. Click on My Network. If you look at page 20, it gives you the name of the device, its IP address, and status. You are interested in all devices that have a status of 'online'.

    3. For each device, note down Name, IP Address, Mac Address.

    4. From your Mac, try ping, for example, ping -c 3 192.168.1.1 which is your router. Try this for each IP which is online. If anything fails, put an X for that entry.

    5. Post the items from step 3 and the X or blank for each device from step 4.

The following will help build a topology of your network.

Here is an example of pinging the device by a Name.

    ping -c 3 www.google.com

    PING www.google.com (74.125.193.106): 56 data bytes

    64 bytes from 74.125.193.106: icmp_seq=0 ttl=44 time=46.815 ms

    64 bytes from 74.125.193.106: icmp_seq=1 ttl=44 time=46.939 ms

    64 bytes from 74.125.193.106: icmp_seq=2 ttl=44 time=47.463 ms

    --- www.google.com ping statistics ---

3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0.0% packet loss

    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 46.815/47.072/47.463/0.281 ms

Here is an example of pinging a device by IP.

    ping -c 3 74.125.193.106

    PING 74.125.193.106 (74.125.193.106): 56 data bytes

Just got your reply above, but made huge strides just now. I first have to turn on printer sharing on my computers. Which I did and now I can see the printer on the iMac, and not only that, I can print to the printer from the iMac both in HW8A7 and the Airport. The print dialogue box does state that I must download software to use this printer but it worked to print 3 different pages for me...yea! I told you I need the basics, start from the beginning...ha. I needed to turn on printer sharing is all on both computers. Now the only problem I have is the laptop. I cannot print under HW8A7 from the laptop, only the Airport. When I go into HW8A7 I get this printer error when I select the Pixma and "Print" : "Support Code : 300 The printer does not respond. Make sure that the printer is plugged in, powered-on, and properly connected to your computer." Prints fine when Airport is selected on laptop but not when under HW8A7 - now the iMac prints under both.

When you turn on printer sharing, the computer which "shares" the printer becomes a "print" server. The original problem still remains, that some  devices can see this shared resource, but others cannot.

What SSID (HWA87 or Airport) is connected to the printer? That should provide a clue what can and cannot see the printer.

The printer should be a network resource, not a resource shared by a specific computer. If another laptop cannot see your "print" server, it cannot print. For it to be a network printer, it should be connected to HWA87, which is hosted by the VZ router. Then each computer can directly print to the network resource which is the printer.

Where would I find that...Printers and Scanners shows Device Name: Canon_MP560_series__3ADD85000000 and Driver Version: 10.84.2.0 ... and Sharing shows:

Computers on your local network can access your computer at:

holding alt key gives me the network I am connected thru on Airport: PHY Mode: 802.11g; BSSID: 00:03:93:e9:70:ed; Channel 1 (2.4 GHz); Security WPA2 Personal; RSSI -50; Transmit Rate: 54. If I unplug the Airport I connect to HW8A7 thru Verizon router: PHY Mode: 802.11g; BSSID: 00:21:63:37:4e:cd; Channel 11 (2.4 GHz); Security WPA2 Personal; RSSI -51; Transmit Rate: 54.

    1. The Airport SSID is called "Airport".

    2. The VZ Router SSID is called HW8A7.

    3. You have two ways of finding out what SSID the printer is connected to.

        a. Look at My Network on the VZ router.

        b. Physically check on the Printer for it's configuration, which will show you what SSID it is connected to.

If the Laptop is connected to WiFi HWA87 and cannot print, it looks like the Laptop cannot see it from HW8A7, which suggests that the Printer is connected to Airport, but you are saying iMac can print when Connected to either, which could mean that the iMac has an alternate path to the printer when connected to HW8A7, which the laptop does not.

As a test, if you unplug the Airport can you print from BOTH laptop and iMac?

Have no idea where My Network on router is. Physically on the bottom of the router it says SSID: HW8A7 . Nowhere physically do I see an SSID on my printer, only the model number. iMac CAN print whether I select HW8A7 or Gary Schnetter's Network (Airport) to the Pixma 560. Laptop CAN print when I am connected to Gary Schnetter's Network (Airport) but NOT when I connect wirelessly to HW8A7 thru wifi connection. I get the error I stated earlier: "Support Code : 300 The printer does not respond. Make sure that the printer is plugged in, powered-on, and properly connected to your computer." Sorry if you tell me EXACTLY where I would see the SSID for the printer I can check, but I don't see if physically anywhere on the printer.

Bring up Safari and type http://192.168.1.1. That is your VZ router.

I go to that site and sign in and there is NO SSID shown. When I click on My Network it says Safari cannot find the page and asks me to sign in again. Loop. On MAIN page see My Router: Your gateway is ready for internet access. Broadband connection; Ethernet Connected; ISP Protocol DHCP; Internet Address 173.65.158.196 .....   Network Status gives lots of different options with Ethernet Connections, Offline, some say IP-STB3 MoCA or Ethernet, Online, (MoCA, online 192.168.1.100; MoCA Online 19.168.1.101; Ethernet Online 192.168.1.3) the rest are all Moca or Ethernet Offline with different names.

Please edit and remove the WPA2 ASCII entry, or delete the screen shot. This is private information. Much better.

The VZ installers reserve 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.255 for the MoCA STBs, they should be ignored. Look for IPs in 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.99.

won't let me copy and paste those 12 in here. Puts them in some type of graph and says cannot save it because I may be signed out, but not signed out. Contact system administrator.
