Q: itunes 11.4 crashes when syncing apps to ipad / iphone

hey everyone, maybe the knowledge of the many may help, as I am rather at a loss right now!

after installing itunes 11.4, my trouble started! running 64 bit version on windows 8.1 - and latest iOS on both devices

all windows updates installed, all drivers for whatever is running on this machien are also up to date

connecting either ipad or iphone to computer, when itunes starts to sync, it gets to the point of "syncing apps to iPAD", it tries to add the first app - and crashes for good!

and yep, I went thru all the suggested thingies recommended on here:

iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717

windows pops up "itunes has stopped working" ... so I headed over to the Windows Event viewer, and for the moment, itunes crashes, I find these two entries in the log file - tried a search on here, google as well, to no avail:

Thanks jkriegshauser.  It worked perfectly.  BTW, it was also working with synching over WiFi, but that takes much longer.

Well, hmmmm... I had high hopes, but this didn't work for me.  All of the apps are tagged as either Install or Remove, none have "Will *" in them.  But yet, iTunes still wants to sync apps and then kaput.

Thanks for posting your information.  I think I'll go back to listening to my 8-track now....

I can't edit the original post for some reason, but I forgot to mention something.

After you change all of the apps marked 'Will Install' to 'Install', close iTunes normally and restart it. This should force it to save out the state of all of the apps for the device.

After you restart iTunes, check again to make sure that nothing is marked as Will Install before you try to sync it.

Does anyone know if Apple will fix this issue?

All of the fixes described above are different ways to achieve a temporary ability to sync.  The problem occurs when apps try to copy to a device.  If your device is fully updated with all apps before you start the sync, then there are no apps being copied from the PC to the device and so a sync completes.  This will only continue until your PC updates apps before the device and then tries to copy them to the device which then crashes iTunes.

Can anyone recommend a download site for iTunes 11.3 as I am wasting a lot of time keeping multiple devices up-to-date with updates to ensure 11.4 doesn't crash?  I have not updated any other PC or Mac in the house to 11.4 and they all continue to sync with no issues.

I wonder if some People have read my solution i posted yesterday (on page 3) since a lot of People are trying sooo complicated things to solve their issue instead of just uninstalling all apple Software and installing iTunes 11.3.0.54 as we suggested.

So here again is a pretty easy solution:

    - uninstall all apple Software (iTunes 11.4.x including bonjour, mobile device Services etc.) / do NOT reboot !

    - download and install iTunes 11.3.0.54 (see link below)

    - retry - it will work

Tested with a media library stored on a Linux NAS. Our library was instantly recognized and no Settings had to be made. We did not have to copy any file from our NAS to our local PC. I also think it will work with an iPhone 6. Would be nice if someone can confirm this.

@AngusCS: You can download iTunes 11.3.0.54 from our site here: http://www.glowfish.de/download.php

tthe problem is you MUST use iTunes 11.4 if you have an iPhone 6.  Mine REQUIRED I update before I could restore and sync.  So downgrading just isn't an option for all.

@glowfish thank you.  Yes this seems to be the best solution (and easiest) for those of us who don't have iPhone 6 yet (mine is on it's way) until Apple come to the party.  How do we get Apple to come to the party?

I have uninstalled 11.4, reinstalled the 11.3.0 from glowfish and have just synchronised three devices one of which was not up-to-date and did copy an app over without crashing.  All three devices are running iOS 8.0.

Does anyone have iTunes 11.3.1 somewhere?

How do we get support for this from Apple.  I tried to log a call and get told to send my device in for repair...

I had a tech support call with an iOS Senior Advisor at Apple Support this morning, so they're aware of the problem and this thread.

Also, given how much diagnostic information we get back as app developers, I'm sure that iTunes crashes are being automatically reported to Apple. At least I really hope so. So the iTunes development team should be getting reports about this particular crash.

The question is: when will they fix it? Given the fact that the iPhone 6 just came out, I'd hope it's pretty soon. But there's no telling.

    Heya AngusCS,

i´ve put iTunes 11.3.1.2 (64-Bit) onto our Webserver for you

You can get it here: http://www.glowfish.de/download.php

    Hope that helps!

    Best regards

    Daniel

PS: Forget about apple telephone Support. They will not be able to resolve that issue. They have to release a complete fixed iTunes Version and that can take days to weeks

@glowfish - Daniel.   Thanks.  I was keen to log a support call so that we might get a groundswell from those of us who have this issue.  I am downloading 11.3.1.

@jkriegshauser I hope you are correct and Apple is aware, but there is no official news anywhere it would seem.

Another work-around that I found is that you don't have to copy your entire media library from NAS to local drive, only the App files (.ipa files). I'll try to post screenshots later, but the basic steps are:

    1. In iTunes, go to Library -> Apps -> All
    2. Assuming that all of your apps are in one folder somewhere, right-click on any App and select 'Show in Windows Explorer'
    3. In the Windows Explorer window that opens up, copy all the files to a local disk somewhere.
    4. In iTunes, select all (CTRL+A) of the Apps and hit the Delete key. Make sure that you just Remove the files from iTunes, not Delete them on the disk.
    5. Drag all the files from Windows Explorer (in the new, local disk location) back to iTunes. It will process all of them and add them back to the library.
      1. (side note: if it asks about already having a file, just go ahead and tell it to replace with the newer one)
    6. Now when you sync it shouldn't crash.

I ran in to this tonight because I tried to update my iPad Air to iOS 8, but it failed and went in to restore mode. After moving the Apps to local disks it is syncing just fine without crashing.

Another variation to try is just to remove and re-add all of the Apps from the NAS without copying them to see if it works. I haven't tried that, so I don't know.

I have the iPhone 6, so I have to use iTunes 11.4. If you can keep using 11.3.1 (or roll back to it), that's probably the best bet.

@jkriegshauser That looks like a nice easy way to stay on 11.4.  I might try this with another PC.

I assume that where you have written NAS I could insert "Network Share"

Still pretty C%$^ that Apple have not just fixed this.  I understand Mac users have similar issues...

My solution to that irritating problem was to

    • delete all Apps from the iTunes Library (keeping the files)
    • map my  NAS share to a drive letter of your choice (I chose Z:)
    • drag all your apps from Z: to your iTunes Window to "refresh" your library

It would seem that photos suffer from a similar problem but without crashing iTunes

Photos on \\server\sharename didn't get synchronized until I used Z: (which was \\server\sharename but as a drive letter)
