Q: Changing wireless printing when changing routers???

OK, not sure if I need to do this so asking to be sure. Right now I am connected wirelessly thru my Verizon router, and then Apple Airport Extreme, but think that is slowing down my internet connection but not sure if it really matters. I can switch to just the wireless router thru Verizon without going thru Airport (seems redundant to be using 2 routers) and connect on my laptop. But when I change to just the Verizon router I can no longer print wirelessly to my Canon Pixma 560 printer. Can anyone give me instructions on exactly how to change the printing options? I read that you select the Print & Fax option in systems but no Print & Fax in Maverick but is Printing and Sharing, but don't see anything there to select. Also, can someone advise me steps to connect wirelessly through a 2nd computer on Mavericks (iMac desktop)? I am not tech davy so need step-by-step instructions and easy terminology or I will be lost, but love my Apple products. Opinions on switching to the only-Verizon router option??? If I DO NOT switch and keep it with airport, instructions on setting up the iMac to wirelessly print also, or if changing to Verizon router same options with that router??? I love the help people are willing to share on these posts and appreciate any help I can get.

On the Mac under Application -> Utilities -> Grab, you can select a portion of th screen, and copy it and save it via Preview as a PNG file, which can be posted here via the Camera icon.

    1. VZ broke your network by giving you the router configuration that they have.

    2. You have a whole-house DVR, i presume. Your MoCA STBs seem to have multi-cast allowed, but other hosts do not, which will break Apple's device discovery which is mDNS (Bonjour). You can read about it here if you are interested - https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/NetServic es/Articles/about.html

    3. The MAC addresses which begin with 00:19:5e, 00:21:1e are ARRIS-owned STB Macs. 58:67:1a may be a Nook (Barnes and Noble). bc:52:b7 looks like an Apple device. 00:03:93 is an Apple device. 78:ab:bb is a Samsung Device. 00:1e:8f is your Canon printer which is offline (strange).

    4. Do you have the printer connected via a USB to anything?

    5. If you turn off the Airport, can you print from both the iMac and the MBP?

We only have a one-room DVR, not whole house, works on the main TV only. I did have a Nook for a short period, no more. No smart phones currently, but going to get them, but my sister was connecting with a Samsung tablet when she visited this summer and she also had an apple iPhone. We do have a Samsung DVD player, Nintendo Wii. If I unplug Airport and try to print from iMac it says The Printer cannot be found, but if I plug in Airport without stopping the printing it then says I "need to install software to use this printer. To install the software, choose Software Update from the Apple menu. If the software for your printer isn't available in Software Update, contact the manufacturer of your printer"...It doesn't then print, and says "Ready on server - no pages found". So I canceled that print job and plugged airport in and tried to print again like I was able to last night, and now I can't print from iMac on HW8A7 - says ready on server - no pages found and you need to install software???? Not sure what happened. Changed to Airport in wifi and try to print from iMac and same issue - ready on server - no pages found and you need to install software...now can't print at all and changed nothing from last night. Go to laptop right away with Airport connected and signed into that says "Printer paused", unpause it and can print right away from laptop and it printed the page I was printing from iMac plus the one from laptop...why didn't it tell me the printer was paused when on iMac but just gave error no pages found??? Unplug airport then and try to print from laptop on HW8A7 says "Support Code : 300 The printer does not respond. Make sure that the printer is plugged in, powered-on, and properly connected to your computer." So left Airport disconnected and back to iMac and selected HW8A7 wifi connection and tried to print with airport disconnected and said the need to install info on iMac but "Printing on server - Connecting to printer." and when I looked on laptop under Printer it gives that Support Code - 300 error above also and doesn't print but says Printing - Connecting to printer. Printer is Not connected by USB at all.

The Pixma has drivers on the Canon website. I suggest you download them on both MBP and iMac. There is no need to share printer.

The dome Airport actually is the device which is allowing you to print at all. When your Macs have the airport in the mix, which allows Bonjour/mDNS, it works, otherwise it does not. You need to talk to VZ tech support and ask them this question...

"Why is mDNS blocked for selected devices in the LAN, while the STBs can multicast?". Tell them you have Bonjour devices, and they [VZ] need to change the policy on the router to allow it on the LAN.

So left Airport disconnected and back to iMac and selected HW8A7 wifi connection and tried to print with airport disconnected and said the need to install info on iMac but "Printing on server - Connecting to printer." and when I looked on laptop under Printer it gives that Support Code - 300 error above also and doesn't print but says Printing - Connecting to printer. HW8A7 is what is actually blocking your printing capabilities.

OK, are you sure this isn't just in the printer set-up? Someone on here gave me instructions on setting up the printer for wifi several years ago. I will look for what they told me and post that once I find it. In the meantime, do I ONLY download the printer drivers? On the Canon site it recommends 4 things:

I cannot see the image, but the Navigator may not be as useful as the CUPS driver and the Scanner driver.

Skip the two Navigators in the middle, but download the first and last entries (Printer and the Scanner drivers).

OK, updated those 2 components on both laptop and iMac. I can now print on both computers when connected thru HW8A7 and Airport, but must have airport connected. If I disconnect airport, then I can't print at all. But now I can print from laptop under hw8a7 also. I also must have my laptop connected wirelessly to print from the iMac (suppose because I am going thru laptop).  Would be nice if I didn't have to, so if my laptop goes down, I can still print from the other computer. I suspect my next step is to contact tech support with the question you mentioned above. Will see if I can chat with them tonight if I hear back. Is this something they must correct on their end? If they want me to change something on my end, should I, or is that going to mess up my present connections? I want to make sure I don't do something they ask me to and I am worse off than I am now, I can at least print now, although would like to be able to do it without airport in case that goes down some day, and also individually from both computers without going thru one another. You have been so helpful with this novice. I am one of those you dread to get hold of because I know so very little about anything technical, thanks for your patience and assistance, it is appreciated more than I can ever convey.

This why I was asking which SSID is the printer connected to. How did you configure the printer? Is there a screen where you put in the SSID for the printer to connect to?

If I disconnect airport, then I can't print at all.

Your printer has the Airport SSID only, based on this. Is the printer physically located close to the Airport?

If you disable printer sharing on the laptop, can the iMac see and print to the printer?

I checked the 9100EM manual, It is probably buried in some firewall setting on it. I do not see it documented in the manual based on cursory look.

This is a test, and I am not sure you want to try it, but you can decide.

Disconnect the Airport from Netgear, but leave it on. Disable printer sharing on all Macs and see if you can print to the printer when each laptop is connected to the Airport. This will confirm that the 9100EM has settings that need to change. If this test works, you have more facts to ask the question from VZ tech support folks. Your will not be able to connect to the "outside" world with this setup. You can plug the Airport back in to the Netgear and get your internet connection back.

This is not done yet. I would like to know why our friends (or should I leave my "fiends" typo in place. )  at VZ have managed to ask you to change without understanding how you use it today. And they have thrown you to the wolves, saying they do not support devices, which were working earlier. They will come up with some BS that the "private" network should be supported by the customer, etc., .

OK, disabled printer sharing on laptop and the iMac cannot find the printer and can't print (left laptop on wifi). I am sorry, but I am not sure what I did to connect this. Someone on here held my hand thru the set-up and got it working. I can't find those emails any longer, too long ago, 3-4 years ago. I want to say it was done thru the Airport Utility. I say this because I took about 20 screen shots of the different screens in Airport Utility so if I needed to would have the settings documented. But I can no longer get into Airport Utility with Mavericks. I do have Snow Leopard on another partition of this drive...can I get to it from there and change it or anything??? Any ideas what I am looking for if so? Haven't tried the above test, but I really think this is in the settings this person walked me thru to set this up the first time. I want to say he set it up thru Airport, is that possible?
