Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Officially requesting response and a fix from Apple. My iPad Air WiFi only is basically worthless after upgrading.... Not happy. Not happy at all. Unbelievable, will not connect to my home WiFi. Thanks.

I'll elaborate on my issue.  WiFi connects and will initially work.  Then it'll just go SLOW with the spinning icon next to the WiFi icon.  Tried forgetting ALL WiFi connections to no avail.  Currently have a Netgear R7000

Other iPad works just fine.  iPad Air 16GB is the one having issues.  Will need to roll back to iOS7 somehow.  Someone from Apple Tech Support PLEASE respond.  This is RIDICULOUS

I've got IPhone 5S 16G. The same problem. Many apps just don't want to start. WIFI Internet...... There is no WiFi internet.

But it was working for the first day after update.

I had to remove many apps to make some room (5.7G) for new iOS, and it seems to be ridiculous.

    So mad.

"I'll elaborate on my issue.  WiFi connects and will initially work.  Then it'll just go SLOW with the spinning icon next to the WiFi icon.  Tried forgetting ALL WiFi connections to no avail.  Currently have a Netgear R7000"

Hmm, my iPad3 is having similar problems, but mostly with apps, and only SPECIFIC apps. I too have the R7000 and that might be either a clue or part of the problem.

I have 3 specific iPad apps with problems that I can easily tell:

    • USA Today, it loads it seems OK, but slowly. Then you can NOT scroll the screen and it closes by itself, or if you select a story without scrolling it doesn't load the story and collapses. Many reports of this under Reviews for the app. However last night at least NEWS and SPORTS tabs worked as usual. All reports in the Review section for the app in iTunes are on iOS8. It might be router related causing this I'm beginning to suspect (more on this later).
    • Showtime is NOT basically working. It works for a few minutes, freezes (no sound) and then 'comes back' but you miss what happened during the freeze (can be long). Was working fine before iOS8.
    • AirAv which is a media client that works with the DLNA server on the R7000. Videos played from the R7000 either do not open or hardly play.

OK, the 'more' part. In trying to diagnose the problem I ran Netgear's Genie on the iPad. Showed a 65Mbps connection to the iPad (normal connection rate). However I decided to enable the QoS on the R7000. That DID fix AirAv and it worked fine. However I can't keep that on as it ruins the PC connections. Yesterday AirAv released a new version with 'fixes'. Well that worked and I no longer needed QoS to be enabled.

What didn't make sense to me was the USA Today app partially working? Looking at the Reviews on that app in iTunes one person thanked USA Today for a quick fix but there was not at least documented?

I'm wondering if there is an underlying Network problem or is there some sort of re-boot that fixes it? Odd that so many people have problems with USA Today and Showtime only and one seems to have healed itself if only partially, or was this a case of something changing in the R7000 when I enabled/disabled QoS? I do know enabling it did NOT fix Showtime and when I tested it, USA Today still didn't work? I just tested USA Today again, it isn't working at all? I'm baffled?

I can't vouch for ALL apps on the iPad but Mail, Pinterest and Facebook are running like molasses.  Forgetting and reconnecting the WiFi makes it work for a while but then it goes back to its broken self eventually

HOW DO I ROLL BACK TO IOS 7????

On my I Pad Air since loading iOS 8.0 cannot get I Book to complete loading books.  The icons appear milky and there is no way to complete the loading.  Wi Fi appears to work just as well (or badly) as before, as connection to web is relatively slow microwave link.  Noticed problems previously loading magazines also.   Not sure if issue is inter related or something to do with Wi Fi.

OK, I'm done with iOS 8 for now.  I couldn't even read a few news stories on my iPad last night.  Just watched the spinning wheel.  Rediculous!  What is the point in all the nice little extras when I can't use the internet.  I will try iOS 8 again when they get WiFi working.  I have reverted back to iOS 7.1.2 on both my iPhone and iPad.

For anyone that is interested in how to go back to iOS 7.1.2, follow the directions at the link below.  Note that the restore file downloads are direct from Apple's servers. Do not save the downloaded restore file in the usual place ("C:\Users\****\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPad Software Updates" in the case of a Windows machine) because iTunes will see that it is old and delete it.  Just save it somewhere else where you can find it.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-downgrade-ios-8-to-ios-7.1.2/

Also note that you only have a very limited time to do this before Apple disables the signatures on the restore files. From what I have read, typically Apple disables the signatures on the previous version of iOS about 1 week after the release of the new version.  You can check if the signatures are still active at the link below.  If 7.1.2 is still "green" for your device, then you can still downgrade.

Everyone that is having WiFi issues, please reply with your wireless routers/access points

(This is something Apple Support should survey right now.  Ridiculous that there hasn't been a response)

i do have exactly the same issue here. Doing a reset of network settings works for a while as long as you use your network in light surf... As soon as you try to use your WiFi with heavy stuff, like Youtube, or any video service, the networks stalls completely. I have here many devices, and it concerns really IOS8. I have iPad air and mini retina IOS8 which are concerned, and other IOS7 iPad which are working perfectly fine. WiFi Network is 5GHZ only with Zyxel professional access points, 300Mbps bandwidth. Tried with a 2.4 network and problem is exactly same. Looks really that the WiFi Chip in the new iPad and latest iPhone is having problem with IOS8.

Frankly, what the f*** is doing Apple with the quality tests before releasing their new OS8 ?

I am wondering how we will upgrade to 8.01 with the fix if the WiFi does not work properly !!!

Please Apple, inform your customers and advise ASAP, this is going to be the baddest update for a long time for a lot of future ****** of customers.

Lets be clear about the problem. It is not the routers or AP's we are connecting to. It is the network subsystem, including WiFi and LTE. Nobody needs to report this information to Apple because it's Apple's stack that is broken, not your wireless devices. Resetting the network has solved my wifi problem, at least for now.
