Q: Mac Pro Freeze/Display glitch on start up

I've only been using my new Mac Pro (late 2013) for a few days now but am expereicing an issue on restart/start up. It seems the computer struggles to search for the two new 1920x1200 Dell displays that are hooked up to it through mini display-DVI converters.

Sometimes it only sees one display, but when it finally finds the second one (usually before the login screen,) the second display appears to look corrupted showing a grid of weird static blocks. This then makes the pinwheel appear and login screen become translucent and eventually freeze forcing me to perform a hard reset.

Usually after a few hard restarts and switching the display cables around, it eventually starts up.

I'm running 10.9.3 btw and also am plagued with the Adobe/GPU issue. Could this problem also be related to OS X?

Thanks.

    Thank you erm26,

I have Cinema 4D running on my MBP with Mavericks - no cursor lag while rendering.

I have Cinema 4D running on my Mac Pro with Mavericks - severe cursor lag when rendering.

So, it's strange. But that can be something else. For now I am concerned about the "draggin-finder-windows-flickering" and "scrolling-flickering".

The Cinema 4D case is "solved". I had to lower the render threads from 8 to 7. A pity though.

But the flickering windows thing - I'm gonna take it to the iShop and make them connect it to a Thunderbolt display to see if it still has the same problem there.

So this is what I have to do with the flickering problem.

I talked to Apple. This is what they say after I paid for their machine:

    1. Drive one hour to a service store and get no gas money

    2. Get them to look at the machine for a couple of days (while not getting a loaner machine and losing work days)

Don't like this at all. The machine has problems after the first weeks. I want a new machine, then they can take as much time as they want looking into what might be the problem with the old.

While I understand your frustration, take a deep breath. Unless your machine is still in its return period I don't know what you were reasonably expecting here. If you don't want to drive, they'll probably offer to send a shipping box. Taking a couple days to fix a machine is reasonable, and if you're worried about your machine going forward, you can still add an extended apple care warranty. Now if they don't fix it and also refuse to replace it, then you've certainly got something to give em **** about, but give em a chance to make it right.

My nMP had flickering problems if I connected it to a VGA monitor. This seems to suggest the clock mismatch hypothesis is valid. I have been using an active adapter that is AMD Eyefinity certified. From my reading, it re-generates clocks for Mac Pro and the monitor. It has been okay for the last 3 days.

IMO, taking it to an Apple Store for repair is useless. I have been working with Apple Engineering team via an Apple senior advisor for the last 3 months. If they cannot provide me with a solution, I don't know what the genius in AppleStore can do. But you may want to do it anyway....

Give me another week to test the new adapter. Hopefully, I will have more definite good news then.

    erm26.

Thank you. No, they have brilliant chat support and I understand they need to have a look. They have a lot of brilliant things. And I have no problems handing it in for service actually. Well, it's not so funny, but I guess I have to do it.

BUT, I expect at least a loaner machine or something in compensation. This is their problem and not mine and I should be compensated. Easy as that.

It should also be said that I now tried to connect it in a lot of different ways.

-To Wacom Cintiq (both DVI-Display Port adapter and DVI-HDMI adapter)

-To Samsung (with the both adapters mentioned above)

-To a Cinema/Thunderbolt screen with thunderbolt cable

This is a MacPro issue, not the adapters.

Check out the following link on AMD's website. It recommends a few adapters for AMD Eyefinity technology:

    vett93,

As mentioned above I still get this flickering windows etc even if I connect with a Apple thunderbolt pure direct connection to an Apple screen. In other words, even when I don't use any adapters whatsoever I still get the flickering.

But thank you anyway for the links.

I had the dual DVI monitor startup freeze problem on 10.9.4 using standard passive displayPort-to-DVI adapters.  When I updated to 10.9.5, it initially solved the problem, but about a day or so afterwards, I got problems with it getting stuck at a grey screen immediately on startup (rather than at the login screen where it used to get to before freezing) and other times it would complete boot and I could login but there would be flickering and screen tearing and display garbage and even a few kernel panic reboots.  I took it into the Apple Store and they ran the full tests on it overnight and found no problems with the hardware.  Their recommendation course of action was to format and reinstall the OS.  Since I had a Time Machine backup, I told them to go ahead.  They installed 10.9.4.  They claimed they tested it with two DVI monitors but I didn't see this firsthand, but I'll assume it's the case.  I picked it up and brought it home and hooked it up to my two monitors and, of course, it did not work.  I'm going to hold off 10.9.5 since that made the machine unusable and I'll wait till Yosemite or 10.9.6.

    adam turton-

The thread where you have posted is about the black cylinder Mac Pro (late 2013 model only). Your photo shows that you are having a serious graphics problem, most likely a Hardware issue on a MacBook Pro. You should probably re-post here is a Host does not move your posting.
