Since Aperture 3.3 are the icons drab and gray - the Aperture 3.3 Release Notes are calling this:
- Newly designed monochrome source list and toolbar icons.
The Release notes will tell you, what has changed since then:

Some like it, some don't, but there is nothing you can do about it, short of patching the Aperture application and replacing all icons side by the old coloured icons. I did it once, but it is a risky nuisance, and has to be done over and over again with each update.

Thanks for the reply, that's put my mind at rest. I'm now wrestling with the MacPhun Tonality app and how it interfaces with Aperture - but that's another story (post).
