Q: Stuck on 'Contacting the iPhone software update server...'

I cannot download iOS 8 via iTunes as it hangs on 'Contact the iPhone software update server...' for hours (even days). Both my wife and I attempted to update via wifi on our phones as well and it will not complete either, with the time remaining increasing to days...

We have 5S iPhones, Windows iTunes and UVerse internet.

Any ideas why we cannot download the update?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.2
